He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.

When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit.

I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.“ But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me.So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels.

“ Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.

My people are bent on turning away from me, and though they call out to the Most High, he shall not raise them up at all.

yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.

But of Israel he says,“ All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof,I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when terror strikes you,when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me.Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord,would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof,therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices.For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them;

The more they were called, the more they went away; they kept sacrificing to the Baals and burning offerings to idols.

But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’”

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

As soon as you enter the city you will find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat till he comes, since he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Now go up, for you will meet him immediately.”

And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff— no bread, no bag, no money in their belts—but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics.And he said to them,“ Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there.And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.”

“ Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him,

Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars.She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table.She has sent out her young women to call from the highest places in the town,

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him,“ Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”But he said to him,“ A man once gave a great banquet and invited many.And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited,‘ Come, for everything is now ready.’

You have neither listened nor inclined your ears to hear, although the Lord persistently sent to you all his servants the prophets,

For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel,“ In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” But you were unwilling,

but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.And proclaim as you go, saying,‘ The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

The Lord gives the word; the women who announce the news are a great host:

See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven.
