Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

“ A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says the Lord Almighty.“ It is you priests who show contempt for my name.“ But you ask,‘ How have we shown contempt for your name?’“ By offering defiled food on my altar.“ But you ask,‘ How have we defiled you?’“ By saying that the Lord’s table is contemptible.When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord Almighty.

Jesus replied:“‘ Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’

But Peter and John replied,“ Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges!

Fear the Lord and the king, my son, and do not join with rebellious officials,

When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice,“ Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”Daniel answered,“ May the king live forever!My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.

And they began to accuse him, saying,“ We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.”

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him,“ King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter.If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand.But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

“ Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.“ But you ask,‘ How are we robbing you?’“ In tithes and offerings.You are under a curse— your whole nation— because you are robbing me.Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty,“ and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.

“ Yes, he does,” he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak.“ What do you think, Simon?” he asked.“ From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes— from their own children or from others?”“ From others,” Peter answered.“ Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him.“ But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four- drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”

Jesus said to him,“ Away from me, Satan! For it is written:‘ Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help.

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority,or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover- up for evil; live as God’s slaves.Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.

Peter and the other apostles replied:“ We must obey God rather than human beings!
