They marveled at his answer and were silent.

They sent some of the Pharisees and the Herodians to him, that they might trap him with words.When they had come, they asked him,“ Teacher, we know that you are honest, and don’t defer to anyone; for you aren’t partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?Shall we give, or shall we not give?” But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them,“ Why do you test me? Bring me a denarius, that I may see it.”They brought it. He said to them,“ Whose is this image and inscription?” They said to him,“ Caesar’s.”Jesus answered them,“ Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” They marveled greatly at him.

All day long they twist my words. All their thoughts are against me for evil.They conspire and lurk, watching my steps. They are eager to take my life.Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, God.

The kings of the earth take a stand, and the rulers take counsel together, against Yahweh, and against his Anointed, saying,

For, behold, they lie in wait for my soul. The mighty gather themselves together against me, not for my disobedience, nor for my sin, Yahweh.

For consider him who has endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, that you don’t grow weary, fainting in your souls.

For I have heard the defaming of many,“ Terror on every side! Denounce, and we will denounce him!” say all my familiar friends, those who watch for my fall.“ Perhaps he will be persuaded, and we will prevail against him, and we will take our revenge on him.”

If he comes to see me, he speaks falsehood. His heart gathers iniquity to itself. When he goes abroad, he tells it.

Then they said,“ Come! Let’s devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law won’t perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let’s strike him with the tongue, and let’s not give heed to any of his words.”

As he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be terribly angry, and to draw many things out of him;lying in wait for him, and seeking to catch him in something he might say, that they might accuse him.
