Whose image and inscription does it have?” They answered and said,“ Caesar’s.”And He said to them,“ Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.

Then they sent to Him some of the Pharisees and the Herodians, to catch Him in His words.When they had come, they said to Him,“ Teacher, we know that You are true, and care about no one; for You do not regard the person of men, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?Shall we pay, or shall we not pay?” But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them,“ Why do you test Me? Bring Me a denarius that I may see it.”So they brought it. And He said to them,“ Whose image and inscription is this?” They said to Him,“ Caesar’s.”And Jesus answered and said to them,“ Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at Him.

All day they twist my words; All their thoughts are against me for evil.They gather together, They hide, they mark my steps, When they lie in wait for my life.Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, O God!

The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,

For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.

For I heard many mocking:“ Fear on every side!”“ Report,” they say,“ and we will report it!” All my acquaintances watched for my stumbling, saying,“ Perhaps he can be induced; Then we will prevail against him, And we will take our revenge on him.”

And if he comes to see me, he speaks lies; His heart gathers iniquity to itself; When he goes out, he tells it.

Then they said,“ Come and let us devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come and let us attack him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.”

And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things,lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, that they might accuse Him.
