Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said, so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.So the spies questioned him:“ Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”He saw through their duplicity and said to them,“ Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?”“ Caesar’s,” they replied.He said to them,“ Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.

Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words.They came to him and said,“ Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?Should we pay or shouldn’t we?” But Jesus knew their hypocrisy.“ Why are you trying to trap me?” he asked.“ Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.”They brought the coin, and he asked them,“ Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”“ Caesar’s,” they replied.Then Jesus said to them,“ Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” And they were amazed at him.

All day long they twist my words; all their schemes are for my ruin.They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps, hoping to take my life.Because of their wickedness do not let them escape; in your anger, God, bring the nations down.

The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying,

See how they lie in wait for me! Fierce men conspire against me for no offense or sin of mine, Lord.

Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

I hear many whispering,“ Terror on every side! Denounce him! Let’s denounce him!” All my friends are waiting for me to slip, saying,“ Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him.”

When one of them comes to see me, he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander; then he goes out and spreads it around.

They said,“ Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest will not cease, nor will counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophets. So come, let’s attack him with our tongues and pay no attention to anything he says.”

When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions,waiting to catch him in something he might say.

They spread a net for my feet— I was bowed down in distress. They dug a pit in my path— but they have fallen into it themselves.

those who with a word make someone out to be guilty, who ensnare the defender in court and with false testimony deprive the innocent of justice.
