Whose image and inscription does it have?” They said,“ Caesar’s.”And He said to them,“ Then pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”And they were unable to catch Him in a statement in the presence of the people; and they were amazed at His answer, and said nothing.

Then they* sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Him in order to trap Him in a statement.They came and* said to Him,“ Teacher, we know that You are truthful and do not care what anyone thinks; for You are not partial to anyone, but You teach the way of God in truth. Is it permissible to pay a poll tax to Caesar, or not?Are we to pay, or not pay?” But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them,“ Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to look at.”And they brought one. And He* said to them,“ Whose image and inscription is this?” And they said to Him,“ Caesar’s.”And Jesus said to them,“ Pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were utterly amazed at Him.

All day long they distort my words; All their thoughts are against me for evil.They attack, they lurk, They watch my steps, As they have waited to take my life.Because of their wickedness, will there be an escape for them? In anger make the peoples fall down, God!

The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers conspire together Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,

For behold, they have set an ambush for my life; Fierce men attack me, Not for my wrongdoing nor for my sin, Lord,

For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

For I have heard the whispering of many,“ Terror on every side! Denounce him; let’s denounce him!” All my trusted friends, Watching for my fall, say:“ Perhaps he will be persuaded, so that we may prevail against him And take our revenge on him.”

And when he comes to see me, he speaks empty words; His heart gathers wickedness to itself; When he goes outside, he tells it.

Then they said,“ Come and let’s devise plans against Jeremiah. Certainly the Law is not going to be lost by the priest, nor advice by the wise, nor the divine word by the prophet! Come, and let’s strike at him with our tongue, and let’s pay no attention to any of his words.”

When He left that place, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to interrogate Him about many subjects,plotting against Him to catch Him in something He might say.

They have prepared a net for my steps; My soul is bowed down; They dug a pit before me; They themselves have fallen into the midst of it. Selah

Who cause a person to be indicted by a word, And set a trap for the arbitrator at the gate, And defraud the one in the right with meaningless arguments.
