But he said to him,“ A certain man made a great supper, and he invited many people.

When an unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he passes through waterless places, seeking rest, and doesn’t find it.Then he says,‘ I will return into my house from which I came out,’ and when he has come back, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order.Then he goes, and takes with himself seven other spirits more evil than he is, and they enter in and dwell there. The last state of that man becomes worse than the first. Even so will it be also to this evil generation.”

“ For the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who was the master of a household, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.He went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace.He said to them,‘ You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went their way.Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise.About the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle. He said to them,‘ Why do you stand here all day idle?’“ They said to him,‘ Because no one has hired us.’“ He said to them,‘ You also go into the vineyard, and you will receive whatever is right.’When evening had come, the lord of the vineyard said to his manager,‘ Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning from the last to the first.’“ When those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came, they each received a denarius.When the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise each received a denarius.When they received it, they murmured against the master of the household,saying,‘ These last have spent one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat!’“ But he answered one of them,‘ Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Didn’t you agree with me for a denarius?Take that which is yours, and go your way. It is my desire to give to this last just as much as to you.Isn’t it lawful for me to do what I want to with what I own? Or is your eye evil, because I am good?’So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few are chosen.”

He said,“ To you it is given to know the mysteries of God’s Kingdom, but to the rest in parables; that‘ seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’

But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first, and said,‘ Son, go work today in my vineyard.’He answered,‘ I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind, and went.He came to the second, and said the same thing. He answered,‘ I’m going, sir,’ but he didn’t go.Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said to him,“ The first.” Jesus said to them,“ Most certainly I tell you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering into God’s Kingdom before you.For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn’t believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. When you saw it, you didn’t even repent afterward, that you might believe him.“ Hear another parable. There was a man who was a master of a household, who planted a vineyard, set a hedge about it, dug a wine press in it, built a tower, leased it out to farmers, and went into another country.When the season for the fruit came near, he sent his servants to the farmers, to receive his fruit.The farmers took his servants, beat one, killed another, and stoned another.Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they treated them the same way.But afterward he sent to them his son, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’But the farmers, when they saw the son, said among themselves,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and seize his inheritance.’So they took him, and threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.When therefore the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those farmers?”They told him,“ He will miserably destroy those miserable men, and will lease out the vineyard to other farmers, who will give him the fruit in its season.”Jesus said to them,“ Did you never read in the Scriptures,‘ The stone which the builders rejected was made the head of the corner. This was from the Lord. It is marvelous in our eyes?’“ Therefore I tell you, God’s Kingdom will be taken away from you, and will be given to a nation producing its fruit.He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but on whomever it will fall, it will scatter him as dust.”When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he spoke about them.When they sought to seize him, they feared the multitudes, because they considered him to be a prophet.

Jesus said to them,“ Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch would tear away from the garment, and a worse hole is made.Neither do people put new wine into old wine skins, or else the skins would burst, and the wine be spilled, and the skins ruined. No, they put new wine into fresh wine skins, and both are preserved.”

He spoke to them many things in parables, saying,“ Behold, a farmer went out to sow.As he sowed, some seeds fell by the roadside, and the birds came and devoured them.Others fell on rocky ground, where they didn’t have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of earth.When the sun had risen, they were scorched. Because they had no root, they withered away.Others fell among thorns. The thorns grew up and choked them.Others fell on good soil, and yielded fruit: some one hundred times as much, some sixty, and some thirty.He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”The disciples came, and said to him,“ Why do you speak to them in parables?”He answered them,“ To you it is given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but it is not given to them.

With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it.Without a parable he didn’t speak to them; but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.
