Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt.I will remove the battle chariots from Israel and the warhorses from Jerusalem. I will destroy all the weapons used in battle, and your king will bring peace to the nations. His realm will stretch from sea to sea and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.

The Lord has sent this message to every land:“ Tell the people of Israel,‘ Look, your Savior is coming. See, he brings his reward with him as he comes.’”

The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from his descendants, until the coming of the one to whom it belongs, the one whom all nations will honor.

Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem!For the Lord will remove his hand of judgment and will disperse the armies of your enemy. And the Lord himself, the King of Israel, will live among you! At last your troubles will be over, and you will never again fear disaster.

“ My servant David will be their king, and they will have only one shepherd. They will obey my regulations and be careful to keep my decrees.

“ During the reigns of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed or conquered. It will crush all these kingdoms into nothingness, and it will stand forever.That is the meaning of the rock cut from the mountain, though not by human hands, that crushed to pieces the statue of iron, bronze, clay, silver, and gold. The great God was showing the king what will happen in the future. The dream is true, and its meaning is certain.”

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!

But I will show love to the people of Judah. I will free them from their enemies— not with weapons and armies or horses and charioteers, but by my power as the Lord their God.”

And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David will be a prince among my people. I, the Lord, have spoken!

“ For the time is coming,” says the Lord,“ when I will raise up a righteous descendant from King David’s line. He will be a King who rules with wisdom. He will do what is just and right throughout the land.And this will be his name:‘ The Lord Is Our Righteousness.’ In that day Judah will be saved, and Israel will live in safety.

Let all the people of Jerusalem shout his praise with joy! For great is the Holy One of Israel who lives among you.”

O Zion, messenger of good news, shout from the mountaintops! Shout it louder, O Jerusalem. Shout, and do not be afraid. Tell the towns of Judah,“ Your God is coming!”

Give your love of justice to the king, O God, and righteousness to the king’s son.Help him judge your people in the right way; let the poor always be treated fairly.May the mountains yield prosperity for all, and may the hills be fruitful.Help him to defend the poor, to rescue the children of the needy, and to crush their oppressors.May they fear you as long as the sun shines, as long as the moon remains in the sky. Yes, forever!May the king’s rule be refreshing like spring rain on freshly cut grass, like the showers that water the earth.May all the godly flourish during his reign. May there be abundant prosperity until the moon is no more.May he reign from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.Desert nomads will bow before him; his enemies will fall before him in the dust.The western kings of Tarshish and other distant lands will bring him tribute. The eastern kings of Sheba and Seba will bring him gifts.All kings will bow before him, and all nations will serve him.He will rescue the poor when they cry to him; he will help the oppressed, who have no one to defend them.He feels pity for the weak and the needy, and he will rescue them.He will redeem them from oppression and violence, for their lives are precious to him.Long live the king! May the gold of Sheba be given to him. May the people always pray for him and bless him all day long.May there be abundant grain throughout the land, flourishing even on the hilltops. May the fruit trees flourish like the trees of Lebanon, and may the people thrive like grass in a field.May the king’s name endure forever; may it continue as long as the sun shines. May all nations be blessed through him and bring him praise.Praise the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does such wonderful things.Praise his glorious name forever! But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, are only a small village among all the people of Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel, whose origins are in the distant past, will come from you on my behalf.

“ Consider this, you who ride on fine donkeys, you who sit on fancy saddle blankets, and you who walk along the road.

Save me so I can praise you publicly at Jerusalem’s gates, so I can rejoice that you have rescued me.

Tell him,‘ This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Here is the man called the Branch. He will branch out from where he is and build the Temple of the Lord.Yes, he will build the Temple of the Lord. Then he will receive royal honor and will rule as king from his throne. He will also serve as priest from his throne, and there will be perfect harmony between his two roles.’

“ Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.”

Beautiful words stir my heart. I will recite a lovely poem about the king, for my tongue is like the pen of a skillful poet.You are the most handsome of all. Gracious words stream from your lips. God himself has blessed you forever.Put on your sword, O mighty warrior! You are so glorious, so majestic!In your majesty, ride out to victory, defending truth, humility, and justice. Go forth to perform awe inspiring deeds!Your arrows are sharp, piercing your enemies’ hearts. The nations fall beneath your feet.Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever. You rule with a scepter of justice.You love justice and hate evil. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you, pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.Myrrh, aloes, and cassia perfume your robes. In ivory palaces the music of strings entertains you.Kings’ daughters are among your noble women. At your right side stands the queen, wearing jewelry of finest gold from Ophir!Listen to me, O royal daughter; take to heart what I say. Forget your people and your family far away.For your royal husband delights in your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord.The princess of Tyre will shower you with gifts. The wealthy will beg your favor.The bride, a princess, looks glorious in her golden gown.In her beautiful robes, she is led to the king, accompanied by her bridesmaids.What a joyful and enthusiastic procession as they enter the king’s palace!Your sons will become kings like their father. You will make them rulers over many lands.I will bring honor to your name in every generation. Therefore, the nations will praise you forever and ever.

Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

For the Lord declares,“ I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain.”The king proclaims the Lord’s decree:“ The Lord said to me,‘ You are my son. Today I have become your Father.Only ask, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the whole earth as your possession.You will break them with an iron rod and smash them like clay pots.’”Now then, you kings, act wisely! Be warned, you rulers of the earth!Serve the Lord with reverent fear, and rejoice with trembling.Submit to God’s royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed in the midst of all your activities— for his anger flares up in an instant. But what joy for all who take refuge in him!

“ In that day,” says the Lord,“ I will slaughter your horses and destroy your chariots.I will tear down your walls and demolish your defenses.

“ What are these for?” the king asked Ziba. Ziba replied,“ The donkeys are for the king’s people to ride on, and the bread and summer fruit are for the young men to eat. The wine is for those who become exhausted in the wilderness.”

‘ And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are not least among the ruling cities of Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.’”

the king said to them,“ Take Solomon and my officials down to Gihon Spring. Solomon is to ride on my own mule.

A ruler will rise in Jacob who will destroy the survivors of Ir.”

“ The king must not build up a large stable of horses for himself or send his people to Egypt to buy horses, for the Lord has told you,‘ You must never return to Egypt.’

As my vision continued that night, I saw someone like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence.He was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey him. His rule is eternal— it will never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed.

He will not fight or shout or raise his voice in public.He will not crush the weakest reed or put out a flickering candle. Finally he will cause justice to be victorious.

He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys. He judged Israel for eight years.

The Lord said to my Lord,“ Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.”The Lord will extend your powerful kingdom from Jerusalem; you will rule over your enemies.When you go to war, your people will serve you willingly. You are arrayed in holy garments, and your strength will be renewed each day like the morning dew.The Lord has taken an oath and will not break his vow:“ You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”

The two disciples left and found the colt standing in the street, tied outside the front door.As they were untying it, some bystanders demanded,“ What are you doing, untying that colt?”They said what Jesus had told them to say, and they were permitted to take it.Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it, and he sat on it.Many in the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him, and others spread leafy branches they had cut in the fields.Jesus was in the center of the procession, and the people all around him were shouting,“ Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!Blessings on the coming Kingdom of our ancestor David! Praise God in highest heaven!”So Jesus came to Jerusalem and went into the Temple. After looking around carefully at everything, he left because it was late in the afternoon. Then he returned to Bethany with the twelve disciples.

Solomon built up a huge force of chariots and horses. He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horses. He stationed some of them in the chariot cities and some near him in Jerusalem.

Then Nathanael exclaimed,“ Rabbi, you are the Son of God— the King of Israel!”

“ Away with him,” they yelled.“ Away with him! Crucify him!”“ What? Crucify your king?” Pilate asked.“ We have no king but Caesar,” the leading priests shouted back.Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus away.Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull( in Hebrew, Golgotha).There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them.And Pilate posted a sign on the cross that read,“ Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it.Then the leading priests objected and said to Pilate,“ Change it from‘ The King of the Jews’ to‘ He said, I am King of the Jews.’”Pilate replied,“ No, what I have written, I have written.”

Now I, Paul, appeal to you with the gentleness and kindness of Christ— though I realize you think I am timid in person and bold only when I write from far away.
