孰意園戶一見其子、乃共議曰：「斯乃厥嗣、我等盍共殺之、可佔其產：」

“ But the renters saw the son coming. They said to one another,‘ This is the one who will receive all the owner’s property someday. Come, let’s kill him. Then everything will be ours.’

But when the vine growers saw the son, they said among themselves,‘ This is the heir; come, let’s kill him and take possession of his inheritance!’

But when the vinedressers saw the son, they said among themselves,‘ This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.’

But the husbandmen, when they saw the son, said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and take his inheritance.

“ But when the tenant farmers saw the son, they said among themselves,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance!’

But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.

But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and get his inheritance!’

But the farmers, when they saw the son, said among themselves,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and seize his inheritance.’

When Joseph’s brothers saw him coming, they recognized him in the distance. As he approached, they made plans to kill him.“ Here comes the dreamer!” they said.“ Come on, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns. We can tell our father,‘ A wild animal has eaten him.’ Then we’ll see what becomes of his dreams!”

Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high council together.“ What are we going to do?” they asked each other.“ This man certainly performs many miraculous signs.If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation.”Caiaphas, who was high priest at that time, said,“ You don’t know what you’re talking about!You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.”He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation.And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world.So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus’ death.

“ In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed.But everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will.

“ But the tenant farmers said to one another,‘ Here comes the heir to this estate. Let’s kill him and get the estate for ourselves!’So they grabbed him and murdered him and threw his body out of the vineyard.

Very early in the morning the leading priests and the elders of the people met again to lay plans for putting Jesus to death.Then they bound him, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.

“ But when the tenant farmers saw his son, they said to each other,‘ Here comes the heir to this estate. Let’s kill him and get the estate for ourselves!’

When the captain of the Temple guard and the leading priests heard this, they were perplexed, wondering where it would all end.Then someone arrived with startling news:“ The men you put in jail are standing in the Temple, teaching the people!”The captain went with his Temple guards and arrested the apostles, but without violence, for they were afraid the people would stone them.Then they brought the apostles before the high council, where the high priest confronted them.“ We gave you strict orders never again to teach in this man’s name!” he said.“ Instead, you have filled all Jerusalem with your teaching about him, and you want to make us responsible for his death!”

At that same time the leading priests and elders were meeting at the residence of Caiaphas, the high priest,plotting how to capture Jesus secretly and kill him.

The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one.“ Let us break their chains,” they cry,“ and free ourselves from slavery to God.”But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them.Then in anger he rebukes them, terrifying them with his fierce fury.For the Lord declares,“ I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain.”The king proclaims the Lord’s decree:“ The Lord said to me,‘ You are my son. Today I have become your Father.Only ask, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the whole earth as your possession.

After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.“ Get up! Flee to Egypt with the child and his mother,” the angel said.“ Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother,and they stayed there until Herod’s death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet:“ I called my Son out of Egypt.”Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men’s report of the star’s first appearance.

And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.
