At that hour Jesus said to the crowds,“ Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me.

And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him,but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.One day, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came upand said to him,“ Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.”He answered them,“ I also will ask you a question. Now tell me,was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?”And they discussed it with one another, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Why did you not believe him?’But if we say,‘ From man,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.”So they answered that they did not know where it came from.And Jesus said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

The divisions of the sons of Aaron were these. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.But Nadab and Abihu died before their father and had no children, so Eleazar and Ithamar became the priests.With the help of Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, David organized them according to the appointed duties in their service.Since more chief men were found among the sons of Eleazar than among the sons of Ithamar, they organized them under sixteen heads of fathers’ houses of the sons of Eleazar, and eight of the sons of Ithamar.They divided them by lot, all alike, for there were sacred officers and officers of God among both the sons of Eleazar and the sons of Ithamar.And the scribe Shemaiah, the son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded them in the presence of the king and the princes and Zadok the priest and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the priests and of the Levites, one father’s house being chosen for Eleazar and one chosen for Ithamar.The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim,the fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin,the seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah,the ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah,the eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim,the thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,the fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer,the seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Happizzez,the nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezkel,the twenty-first to Jachin, the twenty-second to Gamul,the twenty-third to Delaiah, the twenty-fourth to Maaziah.These had as their appointed duty in their service to come into the house of the Lord according to the procedure established for them by Aaron their father, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded him.

And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him,and they said to him,“ By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?”Jesus said to them,“ I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me.”And they discussed it with one another, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Why then did you not believe him?’But shall we say,‘ From man’?”— they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a prophet.So they answered Jesus,“ We do not know.” And Jesus said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
