耶稣天天在圣殿里教导人。祭司长们、经文士们和民间的首领们想要杀害他，可是他们不知道怎样下手，因为民众都倾心听他。就在那些日子里，有一天耶稣在圣殿里教导民众、传福音的时候，祭司长们、经文士们和长老们一起上前来，对他说：“请告诉我们：你凭什么权柄做这些事？是谁给你这权柄的？”耶稣回答他们，说：“我也要问你们一个问题，你们告诉我：约翰的洗礼是来自天上，还是来自人间呢？”他们就彼此商量，说：“如果我们说‘是来自天上’，他就会问‘你们为什么不相信他呢？’但如果说‘是来自人间’，那么民众都会用石头砸我们，因为他们深信约翰是先知。”于是他们回答：“不知道是从哪里来的。”耶稣就对他们说：“我也不告诉你们我凭什么权柄做这些事。”

他们又来到耶路撒冷。当耶稣在圣殿里行走的时候，祭司长们、经文士们和长老们来到他那里。他们问：“你凭什么权柄做这些事？谁给你这权柄，让你做这些事？”耶稣对他们说：“我要问你们一个问题，你们回答我，我就告诉你们我凭什么权柄做这些事。约翰的洗礼是来自天上，还是来自人间呢？你们回答我！”他们就彼此讨论，说：“如果我们说‘是来自天上’，他就会问‘那么你们为什么不相信他呢？’可是我们能说‘是来自人间’吗？”原来他们怕民众，因为大家都认为约翰的确是先知。于是他们回答耶稣，说：“我们不知道。”耶稣就对他们说：“我也不告诉你们我凭什么权柄做这些事。”
