He told them,‘ You also go and work in my vineyard. I’ll pay you what is right.’

and to them he said,‘ You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’

So he hired them, telling them he would pay them whatever was right at the end of the day.

He said to them,‘ You also go into my vineyard, and I’ll give you whatever is right.’ So off they went.

Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey— whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever- increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness.When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.

Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.

All the people saw this and began to mutter,“ He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,“ Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”Jesus said to him,“ Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service.Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.

Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.

As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth.“ Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him.“ By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked.“ And who gave you this authority?”Jesus replied,“ I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.John’s baptism— where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?” They discussed it among themselves and said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’But if we say,‘ Of human origin’— we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”So they answered Jesus,“ We don’t know.” Then he said,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.“ What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said,‘ Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’“‘ I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.“ Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered,‘ I will, sir,’ but he did not go.“ Which of the two did what his father wanted?”“ The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them,“ Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.

And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do— living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.
