When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers.

The other ten disciples heard about this. They became angry at the two brothers.

When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant.

In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

Or do you think the scripture means nothing when it says,“ The spirit that God caused to live within us has an envious yearning”?But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says,“ God opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.”

With pride comes only contention, but wisdom is with the well-advised.

Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition or vanity, each of you should, in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself.

Now when the other ten heard this, they became angry with James and John.

So they began to question one another as to which of them it could possibly be who would do this.A dispute also started among them over which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.So Jesus said to them,“ The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority over them are called‘ benefactors.’

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfishness in your hearts, do not boast and tell lies against the truth.Such wisdom does not come from above but is earthly, natural, demonic.For where there is jealousy and selfishness, there is disorder and every evil practice.But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and not hypocritical.And the fruit that consists of righteousness is planted in peace among those who make peace.Where do the conflicts and where do the quarrels among you come from? Is it not from this, from your passions that battle inside you?

Love is patient, love is kind, it is not envious. Love does not brag, it is not puffed up.
