The soldiers led him away into the palace( that is, the governor’s residence) and called the whole company together.They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on him.And they began to salute him,“ Hail, king of the Jews!”They were hitting him on the head with a stick and spitting on him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying him homage.After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple robe and put his clothes on him. They led him out to crucify him.

For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep.Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.

Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him.

Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the governor’s residence and gathered the whole company around him.They stripped him and dressed him in a scarlet robe.They twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and placed a staff in his right hand. And they knelt down before him and mocked him:“ Hail, king of the Jews!”Then they spat on him, took the staff, and kept hitting him on the head.After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe, put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.

Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They did not enter the headquarters themselves; otherwise they would be defiled and unable to eat the Passover.So Pilate came out to them and said,“ What charge do you bring against this man?”They answered him,“ If this man weren’t a criminal, we wouldn’t have handed him over to you.”Pilate told them,“ You take him and judge him according to your law.”“ It’s not legal for us to put anyone to death,” the Jews declared.They said this so that Jesus’s words might be fulfilled indicating what kind of death he was going to die.Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?”Jesus answered,“ Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about me?”“ I’m not a Jew, am I?” Pilate replied.“ Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?”“ My kingdom is not of this world,” said Jesus.“ If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”“ You are a king then?” Pilate asked.“ You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied.“ I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”“ What is truth?” said Pilate. After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them,“ I find no grounds for charging him.

Then some began to spit on him, to blindfold him, and to beat him, saying,“ Prophesy!” The temple servants also took him and slapped him.

“ For, in fact, in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed,

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him.

Those who passed by were yelling insults at him, shaking their heads, and saying,“ Ha! The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,save yourself by coming down from the cross!”In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking him among themselves and saying,“ He saved others, but he cannot save himself!

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied before Pilate, though he had decided to release him.You denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer released to you.You killed the source of life, whom God raised from the dead; we are witnesses of this.By faith in his name, his name has made this man strong, whom you see and know. So the faith that comes through Jesus has given him this perfect health in front of all of you.

As soon as it was morning, having held a meeting with the elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin, the chief priests tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.

For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.

He came to us, took Paul’s belt, tied his own feet and hands, and said,“ This is what the Holy Spirit says:‘ In this way the Jews in Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him over to the Gentiles.’”

Then their whole assembly rose up and brought him before Pilate.They began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”So Pilate asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?” He answered him,“ You say so.”Pilate then told the chief priests and the crowds,“ I find no grounds for charging this man.”But they kept insisting,“ He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he started even to here.”

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.The soldiers also twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and clothed him in a purple robe.And they kept coming up to him and saying,“ Hail, king of the Jews!” and were slapping his face.Pilate went outside again and said to them,“ Look, I’m bringing him out to you to let you know I find no grounds for charging him.”

Then they spat in his face and beat him; others slapped himand said,“ Prophesy to us, Messiah! Who was it that hit you?”

Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt, mocked him, dressed him in bright clothing, and sent him back to Pilate.

He will revive us after two days, and on the third day he will raise us up so we can live in his presence.

With godless mockery they gnashed their teeth at me.

Everyone who sees me mocks me; they sneer and shake their heads:“ He relies on the LORD; let him save him; let the LORD rescue him, since he takes pleasure in him.”

After tying him up, they led him away and handed him over to Pilate, the governor.Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.“ I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said.“ What’s that to us?” they said.“ See to it yourself!”So he threw the silver into the temple and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.The chief priests took the silver and said,“ It’s not permitted to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.”They conferred together and bought the potter’s field with it as a burial place for foreigners.Therefore that field has been called“ Field of Blood” to this day.Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him whose price was set by the Israelites,and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.

Your dead will live; their bodies will rise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For you will be covered with the morning dew, and the earth will bring out the departed spirits.

He also said to them,“ This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead the third day,
