The Lord foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.

He thwarts the plans of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success.He catches the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are swept away.

When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the Lord, the God of Israel,they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the families and said,“ Let us help you build because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him since the time of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us here.”

So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say,“ May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”

Destructive forces are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets.If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were rising against me, I could hide.But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend,with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship at the house of God, as we walked about among the worshipers.Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the realm of the dead, for evil finds lodging among them.

Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it?

They had been invited as guests and went quite innocently, knowing nothing about the matter.While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, to come from Giloh, his hometown. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept on increasing.

Everyone lies to their neighbor; they flatter with their lips but harbor deception in their hearts.May the Lord silence all flattering lips and every boastful tongue—

Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them:“ The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.”Going at once to Jesus, Judas said,“ Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.

Absalom and all the men of Israel said,“ The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom.

Enemies disguise themselves with their lips, but in their hearts they harbor deceit.Though their speech is charming, do not believe them, for seven abominations fill their hearts.

Then Jehu brought all the people together and said to them,“ Ahab served Baal a little; Jehu will serve him much.Now summon all the prophets of Baal, all his servants and all his priests. See that no one is missing, because I am going to hold a great sacrifice for Baal. Anyone who fails to come will no longer live.” But Jehu was acting deceptively in order to destroy the servants of Baal.

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written:“ He catches the wise in their craftiness”;and again,“ The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”

There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord.

Go and get more information. Find out where David usually goes and who has seen him there. They tell me he is very crafty.Find out about all the hiding places he uses and come back to me with definite information. Then I will go with you; if he is in the area, I will track him down among all the clans of Judah.”
