They were carrying grain offerings and incense to present at the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem.Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them. He was pretending to cry as he walked along. When he met them, he said to them,“ Come with me to meet Gedaliah son of Ahikam.”But as soon as they were inside the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw their bodies in a cistern.

The LORD frustrates the decisions of the nations; he nullifies the plans of the peoples.The LORD’s decisions stand forever; his plans abide throughout the ages.

He frustrates the plans of the crafty so that their hands cannot accomplish what they had planned!He catches the wise in their own craftiness, and the counsel of the cunning is brought to a quick end.

When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin learned that the former exiles were building a temple for the LORD God of Israel,they came to Zerubbabel and the leaders and said to them,“ Let us help you build, for like you we seek your God and we have been sacrificing to him from the time of King Esarhaddon of Assyria, who brought us here.”

Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah with this warning,“ May the gods judge me severely if by this time tomorrow I do not take your life as you did theirs!”

Disaster is within it; violence and deceit do not depart from its public square.Indeed, it is not an enemy who insults me, or else I could bear it; it is not one who hates me who arrogantly taunts me, or else I could hide from him.But it is you, a man like me, my close friend in whom I confided.We would share personal thoughts with each other; in God’s temple we would walk together among the crowd.May death destroy them! May they go down alive into Sheol! For evil is in their dwelling place and in their midst.

Whose command was ever fulfilled unless the Lord decreed it?

Since they were invited, they went naively and were unaware of what Absalom was planning.While he was offering sacrifices, Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s adviser, to come from his city, Giloh. The conspiracy was gaining momentum, and the people were starting to side with Absalom.

People lie to one another; they flatter and deceive.May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that boasts!

( Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying,“ The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him!”)Immediately he went up to Jesus and said,“ Greetings, Rabbi,” and kissed him.

Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said,“ The advice of Hushai the Arkite sounds better than the advice of Ahithophel.” Now the LORD had decided to frustrate the sound advice of Ahithophel, so that the LORD could bring disaster on Absalom.

The one who hates others disguises it with his lips, but he stores up deceit within him.When he speaks graciously, do not believe him, for there are seven abominations within him.

Jehu assembled all the people and said to them,“ Ahab worshiped Baal a little; Jehu will worship him with great devotion.So now, bring to me all the prophets of Baal, as well as all his servants and priests. None of them must be absent, for I am offering a great sacrifice to Baal. Any of them who fail to appear will lose their lives.” But Jehu was tricking them so he could destroy the servants of Baal.

For the wisdom of this age is foolishness with God. As it is written,“ He catches the wise in their craftiness.”And again,“ The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”

There is no wisdom and there is no understanding, and there is no counsel against the LORD.

Go and make further arrangements. Determine precisely where he is and who has seen him there, for I am told that he is extremely cunning.Locate precisely all the places where he hides and return to me with dependable information. Then I will go with you. If he is in the land, I will find him among all the thousands of Judah.”
