Here is what I tell you. Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery. A man may divorce his wife only if she has not been faithful to him.”

A wife is bound as long as her husband is living. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to anyone she wants— only in the Lord.

“ Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and everyone who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.

But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

To the married I give this command— not I, but the Lord— a wife is not to leave her husband.But if she does leave, she must remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband— and a husband is not to divorce his wife.But I( not the Lord) say to the rest: If any brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.Also, if any woman has an unbelieving husband and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce her husband.

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and the kind of sexual immorality that is not even tolerated among the Gentiles— a man is sleeping with his father’s wife.

But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him,“ You are about to die because of the woman you have taken, for she is a married woman.”

I observed that it was because unfaithful Israel had committed adultery that I had sent her away and had given her a certificate of divorce. Nevertheless, her treacherous sister Judah was not afraid but also went and prostituted herself.

He said to them,“ Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her.Also, if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

So you extended your prostitution to Chaldea, the land of merchants, but you were not even satisfied with this!

For example, a married woman is legally bound to her husband while he lives. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law regarding the husband.So then, if she is married to another man while her husband is living, she will be called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law. Then, if she is married to another man, she is not an adulteress.

“‘ But you trusted in your beauty and acted like a prostitute because of your fame. You lavished your sexual favors on everyone who passed by. Your beauty became his.

“‘ Then I passed by you and saw you, and you were indeed at the age for love. So I spread the edge of my garment over you and covered your nakedness. I pledged myself to you, entered into a covenant with you— this is the declaration of the Lord GOD— and you became mine.

So Pharaoh sent for Abram and said,“ What have you done to me? Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?Why did you say,‘ She’s my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now, here is your wife. Take her and go!”

If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him to marry another, can he ever return to her? Wouldn’t such a land become totally defiled? But you! You have prostituted yourself with many partners— can you return to me? This is the LORD’s declaration.

Jehoram also built high places in the hills of Judah, and he caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to prostitute themselves, and he led Judah astray.

A wife does not have the right over her own body, but her husband does. In the same way, a husband does not have the right over his own body, but his wife does.
