Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked,“ Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”

Some Pharisees came to test Jesus. They asked,“ Does the Law allow a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?”

And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking,“ Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?”

Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question:“ Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife for just any reason?”

Some Pharisees approached him to test him. They asked,“ Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife on any grounds?”

Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking,“ Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?”

And there came unto him Pharisees, trying him, and saying, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

Some Pharisees approached Him to test Him. They asked,“ Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife on any grounds?”

Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven.

And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying,“ Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not regard the person of men.Tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said,“ Why do you test Me, you hypocrites?

This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.

Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying,

Shall we pay, or shall we not pay?” But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them,“ Why do you test Me? Bring Me a denarius that I may see it.”

Then they sent to Him some of the Pharisees and the Herodians, to catch Him in His words.

And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things,lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, that they might accuse Him.

“ Furthermore it has been said,‘ Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.

Yet you say,“ For what reason?” Because the Lord has been witness Between you and the wife of your youth, With whom you have dealt treacherously; Yet she is your companion And your wife by covenant.But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth.“ For the Lord God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one’s garment with violence,” Says the Lord of hosts.“ Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.”
