Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked,“ Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”

Some Pharisees came to test Jesus. They asked,“ Does the Law allow a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?”

And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking,“ Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?”

Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question:“ Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife for just any reason?”

Some Pharisees approached him to test him. They asked,“ Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife on any grounds?”

Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking,“ Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?”

The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him,“ Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?”

And there came unto him Pharisees, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? trying him.

Where your fathers tried me by proving me, And saw my works forty years.

And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and trying him asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

And they send to him their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one: for thou regardest not the person of men.Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Cæsar, or not?But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why make ye trial of me, ye hypocrites?

And this they said, trying him, that they might have whereof to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.

And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, trying him:

Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why make ye trial of me? bring me a denarius, that I may see it.

And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, that they might catch him in talk.

And when he was come out from thence, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press upon him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things;laying wait for him, to catch something out of his mouth.

It was said also, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:but I say unto you, that every one that putteth away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, maketh her an adulteress: and whosoever shall marry her when she is put away committeth adultery.

Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because Jehovah hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously, though she is thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.And did he not make one, although he had the residue of the Spirit? And wherefore one? He sought a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.For I hate putting away, saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, and him that covereth his garment with violence, saith Jehovah of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.
