A Gentile woman who lived there came to him, pleading,“ Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely.”

So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.“ How long has this been happening?” Jesus asked the boy’s father. He replied,“ Since he was a little boy.The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.”

One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said,“ Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that won’t let him talk.And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn’t do it.”

So the demons begged,“ If you cast us out, send us into that herd of pigs.”“ All right, go!” Jesus commanded them. So the demons came out of the men and entered the pigs, and the whole herd plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.

Whenever he was put into chains and shackles— as he often was— he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him.Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones.

As he traveled through Galilee, he came to Cana, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a government official in nearby Capernaum whose son was very sick.When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Jesus to come to Capernaum to heal his son, who was about to die.

So Satan left the Lord’s presence, and he struck Job with terrible boils from head to foot.

Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet,pleading fervently with him.“ My little daughter is dying,” he said.“ Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.”

You have always put a wall of protection around him and his home and his property. You have made him prosper in everything he does. Look how rich he is!But reach out and take away everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face!”“ All right, you may test him,” the Lord said to Satan.“ Do whatever you want with everything he possesses, but don’t harm him physically.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence.One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting at the oldest brother’s house,a messenger arrived at Job’s home with this news:“ Your oxen were plowing, with the donkeys feeding beside them,when the Sabeans raided us. They stole all the animals and killed all the farmhands. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”While he was still speaking, another messenger arrived with this news:“ The fire of God has fallen from heaven and burned up your sheep and all the shepherds. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”While he was still speaking, a third messenger arrived with this news:“ Three bands of Chaldean raiders have stolen your camels and killed your servants. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”While he was still speaking, another messenger arrived with this news:“ Your sons and daughters were feasting in their oldest brother’s home.Suddenly, a powerful wind swept in from the wilderness and hit the house on all sides. The house collapsed, and all your children are dead. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”

A man in the crowd called out to him,“ Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, my only child.An evil spirit keeps seizing him, making him scream. It throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It batters him and hardly ever leaves him alone.I begged your disciples to cast out the spirit, but they couldn’t do it.”Jesus said,“ You faithless and corrupt people! How long must I be with you and put up with you?” Then he said to the man,“ Bring your son here.”As the boy came forward, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into a violent convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit and healed the boy. Then he gave him back to his father.
