“ But I tell you: Elijah has already come, and they didn’t recognize him. On the contrary, they did whatever they pleased to him. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”

第予語爾、依理藹實已蒞臨、而人莫之識、且任意處之。人子之將罹橫逆、亦復如是。』

But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him.Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the LORD has punished him for the iniquity of us all.He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not open his mouth.He was taken away because of oppression and judgment, and who considered his fate? For he was cut off from the land of the living; he was struck because of my people’s rebellion.He was assigned a grave with the wicked, but he was with a rich man at his death, because he had done no violence and had not spoken deceitfully.Yet the LORD was pleased to crush him severely. When you make him a guilt offering, he will see his seed, he will prolong his days, and by his hand, the LORD’s pleasure will be accomplished.After his anguish, he will see light and be satisfied. By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many, and he will carry their iniquities.Therefore I will give him the many as a portion, and he will receive the mighty as spoil, because he willingly submitted to death, and was counted among the rebels; yet he bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels.

From then on Jesus began to point out to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.

let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified and whom God raised from the dead— by him this man is standing here before you healthy.

You denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer released to you.You killed the source of life, whom God raised from the dead; we are witnesses of this.

King Herod heard about it, because Jesus’s name had become well known. Some said,“ John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that’s why miraculous powers are at work in him.”But others said,“ He’s Elijah.” Still others said,“ He’s a prophet, like one of the prophets from long ago.”When Herod heard of it, he said,“ John, the one I beheaded, has been raised!”For Herod himself had given orders to arrest John and to chain him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her.John had been telling Herod,“ It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not,because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing he was a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard him he would be very perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.An opportune time came on his birthday, when Herod gave a banquet for his nobles, military commanders, and the leading men of Galilee.When Herodias’s own daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl,“ Ask me whatever you want, and I’ll give it to you.”He promised her with an oath:“ Whatever you ask me I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”She went out and said to her mother,“ What should I ask for?”“ John the Baptist’s head,” she said.At once she hurried to the king and said,“ I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head on a platter immediately.”Although the king was deeply distressed, because of his oaths and the guests he did not want to refuse her.The king immediately sent for an executioner and commanded him to bring John’s head. So he went and beheaded him in prison,brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother.

Before his coming to public attention, John had previously proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.Now as John was completing his mission, he said,‘ Who do you think I am? I am not the one. But one is coming after me, and I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet.’“ Brothers and sisters, children of Abraham’s race, and those among you who fear God, it is to us that the word of this salvation has been sent.Since the residents of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him or the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, they have fulfilled their words by condemning him.Though they found no grounds for the death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him killed.

But he strictly warned and instructed them to tell this to no one,saying,“ It is necessary that the Son of Man suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.”Then he said to them all,“ If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will save it.For what does it benefit someone if he gains the whole world, and yet loses or forfeits himself?

When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching and said,“ By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority?”Jesus answered them,“ I will also ask you one question, and if you answer it for me, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things.Did John’s baptism come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” They discussed it among themselves,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say to us,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’

There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony he gives about me is true.You sent messengers to John, and he testified to the truth.I don’t receive human testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved.John was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.“ But I have a greater testimony than John’s because of the works that the Father has given me to accomplish. These very works I am doing testify about me that the Father has sent me.

But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the evil things he had done,Herod added this to everything else— he locked up John in prison.

Now when John heard in prison what the Christ was doing, he sent a message through his disciples

He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.

Was John’s baptism from heaven or of human origin? Answer me.”They discussed it among themselves:“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’But if we say,‘ Of human origin’”— they were afraid of the crowd, because everyone thought that John was truly a prophet.

For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn’t believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; but you, when you saw it, didn’t even change your minds then and believe him.

Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him.

Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.

For Herod had arrested John, chained him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,since John had been telling him,“ It’s not lawful for you to have her.”Though Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd since they regarded John as a prophet.When Herod’s birthday celebration came, Herodias’s daughter danced before them and pleased Herod.So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.Prompted by her mother, she answered,“ Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.”Although the king regretted it, he commanded that it be granted because of his oaths and his guests.So he sent orders and had John beheaded in the prison.

For John the Baptist did not come eating bread or drinking wine, and you say,‘ He has a demon!’

“ Elijah does come first and restores all things,” he replied.“ Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did whatever they pleased to him, just as it is written about him.”

What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.This is the one about whom it is written: See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you.“ Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared, but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been suffering violence, and the violent have been seizing it by force.For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.And if you’re willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who is to come.Let anyone who has ears listen.
