The disciples asked him,“ Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of Yahweh comes.He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”

Some of them who stood there, when they heard it, said,“ This man is calling Elijah.”Immediately one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him a drink.The rest said,“ Let him be. Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”

They asked him,“ What then? Are you Elijah?” He said,“ I am not.”“ Are you the prophet?” He answered,“ No.”

They asked him, saying,“ Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

Behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them talking with him.Peter answered, and said to Jesus,“ Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, let’s make three tents here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
