asked him,“ If you aren’t the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet, what right do you have to baptize?”

“ Look, I am sending you the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord arrives.His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise I will come and strike the land with a curse.”

Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah.One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink.But the rest said,“ Wait! Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”

“ Well then, who are you?” they asked.“ Are you Elijah?”“ No,” he replied.“ Are you the Prophet we are expecting?”“ No.”

Then they asked him,“ Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes?”

Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus.Peter exclaimed,“ Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials— one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
