The disciples asked him,“ Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

The disciples asked him,“ Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah has to come first?”

And the disciples asked him,“ Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”

Then his disciples asked him,“ Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes?”

So the disciples asked him,“ Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

And His disciples asked Him,“ Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

His disciples asked him, saying,“ Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.

questioned him,“ Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

“ See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.”

When some of those standing there heard this, they said,“ He’s calling Elijah.”Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink.The rest said,“ Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

They asked him,“ Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said,“ I am not.”“ Are you the Prophet?” He answered,“ No.”

And they asked him,“ Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.Peter said to Jesus,“ Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters— one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
