The disciples asked him,“ Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

Then his disciples asked him,“ Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes?”

And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come.

They asked him, and said to him,“ Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

“ Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord.He will turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and strike the land with complete destruction.”

And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, said,“ This man is calling for Elijah.”And immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink.But the rest of them said,“ Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him.”

And so they asked him,“ What then? Are you Elijah?” And he* said,“ I am not.”“ Are you the Prophet?” And he answered,“ No.”

And they asked Him, saying,“ Why is it that the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.Peter responded and said to Jesus,“ Lord, it is good that we are here. If You want, I will make three tabernacles here: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
