They said to him,“ We have here only five loaves and two fish.”“ Bring them here to me,” he replied.Then he instructed the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fish, and looking up to heaven he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, twelve baskets full.Not counting women and children, there were about five thousand men who ate.

“ Here is a boy who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what good are these for so many people?”Jesus said,“ Have the people sit down.”( Now there was a lot of grass in that place.) So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed the bread to those who were seated. He then did the same with the fish, as much as they wanted.When they were all satisfied, Jesus said to his disciples,“ Gather up the broken pieces that are left over, so that nothing is wasted.”So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves left over by the people who had eaten.

But he said to them,“ You give them something to eat.” They replied,“ We have no more than five loaves and two fish– unless we go and buy food for all these people.”( Now about five thousand men were there.) Then he said to his disciples,“ Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”So they did as Jesus directed, and the people all sat down.Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven he gave thanks and broke them. He gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.They all ate and were satisfied, and what was left over was picked up– twelve baskets of broken pieces.

So he said to them,“ You foolish people– how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!Wasn’t it necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and enter into his glory?”Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things written about himself in all the scriptures.

Jesus said,“ Even after all this, are you still so foolish?Don’t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer?

He said to them,“ How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” When they found out, they said,“ Five– and two fish.”Then he directed them all to sit down in groups on the green grass.So they reclined in groups of hundreds and fifties.He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to his disciples to serve the people, and he divided the two fish among them all.They all ate and were satisfied,and they picked up the broken pieces and fish that were left over, twelve baskets full.Now there were five thousand men who ate the bread.

He said to them,“ Are you so foolish? Don’t you understand that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him?

All those I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent!
