Then Jesus said to his disciples,“ Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

不肯背起他的十字架跟從我的人不配作我的門徒。

若不背起自己的十字架跟從我，就不能作我的門徒。

既然基督曾在肉身上為你們受苦，你們也要懷著同樣的心志，因為肉體受過苦的人已經與罪斷絕了關係，可以在今後的生活中不再隨從人的私慾，只服從上帝的旨意。

耶穌望著他，心中愛他，便說：「你還有一件事沒有做，就是變賣你所有的產業，送給窮人，你必有財寶存在天上，然後你還要來跟從我。」

耶穌又教導眾人說：「如果有人要跟從我，就應當捨己，天天背起他的十字架跟從我。因為想救自己生命的，必失去生命；但為了我而失去生命的，必得到生命。人若賺得全世界，卻失去自己或喪掉自己，又有什麼益處呢？如果有人以我和我的道為恥，將來人子在自己、天父和聖天使的榮耀中降臨時，也必以這人為恥。我實在告訴你們，有些站在這裡的人在有生之年就必看見上帝的國。」

其實凡立志在基督耶穌裡過敬虔生活的人都會受到迫害。

祂叫眾人和門徒一起過來，對他們說：「如果有人要跟從我，就應當捨己，背起他的十字架跟從我。

摩西長大成人後，憑信心拒絕做法老之女的兒子，寧願與上帝的子民一同受苦，也不肯享受一時的罪中之樂。在他眼中，為基督所受的凌辱遠比埃及的財富更有價值，因為他盼望的是將來的賞賜。

現在我因能夠為你們受苦而歡喜，並且我是為基督的身體——教會的緣故，在自己身上補滿基督未受的苦難。

堅固各地門徒的信心，鼓勵他們要持守信仰，並且說：「我們在進入上帝國的道路上必經歷許多苦難。」

耶穌背著自己的十字架出來，前往髑髏地，那地方希伯來話叫各各他。

免得有人因遭受這些患難而動搖，因為你們知道我們必遭受患難。

亞歷山大和魯孚的父親古利奈人西門從鄉下來，途經那地方，衛兵就強迫他背耶穌的十字架。

路上，他們遇見一個叫西門的古利奈人，就強迫他背耶穌的十字架。

他們帶耶穌出去的時候，抓住從鄉下來的古利奈人西門，讓他背著十字架跟在耶穌後面。
