They answered,“ Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do?After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! The Scriptures say,‘ Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

But Jesus knew their evil motives.“ You hypocrites!” he said.“ Why are you trying to trap me?

Don’t you know or understand even yet? Are your hearts too hard to take it in?‘ You have eyes— can’t you see? You have ears— can’t you hear?’ Don’t you remember anything at all?When I fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread, how many baskets of leftovers did you pick up afterward?”“ Twelve,” they said.“ And when I fed the 4,000 with seven loaves, how many large baskets of leftovers did you pick up?”“ Seven,” they said.“ Don’t you understand yet?” he asked them.

Then Jesus turned to the crowd and said,“ When you see clouds beginning to form in the west, you say,‘ Here comes a shower.’ And you are right.When the south wind blows, you say,‘ Today will be a scorcher.’ And it is.You fools! You know how to interpret the weather signs of the earth and sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the present times.

As the crowd pressed in on Jesus, he said,“ This evil generation keeps asking me to show them a miraculous sign. But the only sign I will give them is the sign of Jonah.What happened to him was a sign to the people of Nineveh that God had sent him. What happens to the Son of Man will be a sign to these people that he was sent by God.
