But Jesus knew their evil plans. He said,“ You pretenders! Why are you trying to trap me?

They said,“ He must be saying this because we don’t have any bread.”Jesus knew what they were saying. So he asked them,“ Why are you talking about having no bread? Why can’t you see or understand? Are you stubborn?Do you have eyes and still don’t see? Do you have ears and still don’t hear? And don’t you remember?Earlier I broke five loaves for the 5,000. How many baskets of pieces did you pick up?”“ Twelve,” they replied.“ Later I broke seven loaves for the 4,000. How many baskets of pieces did you pick up?”“ Seven,” they answered.He said to them,“ Can’t you understand yet?”

“ The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat,” he said.

Jesus spoke to the crowd. He said,“ You see a cloud rising in the west. Right away you say,‘ It’s going to rain.’ And it does.The south wind blows. So you say,‘ It’s going to be hot.’ And it is.You pretenders! You know how to understand the appearance of the earth and the sky. Why can’t you understand the meaning of what is happening right now?

As the crowds grew larger, Jesus spoke to them.“ The people of today are evil,” he said.“ They ask for a sign from God. But none will be given except the sign of Jonah.He was a sign from God to the people of Nineveh. In the same way, the Son of Man will be a sign from God to the people of today.
