When he went out from there, the experts in the law and the Pharisees began to oppose him bitterly, and to ask him hostile questions about many things,plotting against him, to catch him in something he might say.

Then when Paul noticed that part of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, he shouted out in the council,“ Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. I am on trial concerning the hope of the resurrection of the dead!”When he said this, an argument began between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.( For the Sadducees say there is no resurrection, or angel, or spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.)

How could you not understand that I was not speaking to you about bread? But beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!”Then they understood that he had not told them to be on guard against the yeast in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

So they said to him,“ Then what miraculous sign will you perform, so that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written,‘ He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

But Jesus realized their evil intentions and said,“ Hypocrites! Why are you testing me?

When the Pharisees saw this they said to his disciples,“ Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

Now when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they assembled together.And one of them, an expert in religious law, asked him a question to test him:

For I tell you, unless your righteousness goes beyond that of the experts in the law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus, asking for a sign from heaven to test him.Sighing deeply in his spirit he said,“ Why does this generation look for a sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to this generation.”Then he left them, got back into the boat, and went to the other side.Now they had forgotten to take bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat.And Jesus ordered them,“ Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!”So they began to discuss with one another about having no bread.When he learned of this, Jesus said to them,“ Why are you arguing about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Have your hearts been hardened?Though you have eyes, don’t you see? And though you have ears, can’t you hear? Don’t you remember?When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?” They replied,“ Twelve.”“ When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?” They replied,“ Seven.”Then he said to them,“ Do you still not understand?”

“ The experts in the law and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat.

But the Pharisees went out and plotted against him, as to how they could assassinate him.

Jesus also said to the crowds,“ When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once,‘ A rainstorm is coming,’ and it does.And when you see the south wind blowing, you say,‘ There will be scorching heat,’ and there is.You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but how can you not know how to interpret the present time?

As the crowds were increasing, Jesus began to say,“ This generation is a wicked generation; it looks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be a sign to this generation.
