Jesus did not say a word. So his disciples came to him. They begged him,“ Send her away. She keeps crying out after us.”

But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away.“ Tell her to go away,” they said.“ She is bothering us with all her begging.”

When it was almost evening, the disciples came to him.“ There is nothing here,” they said.“ It’s already getting late. Send the crowds away. They can go and buy some food in the villages.”

As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them. But he pretended to be a stranger. He spoke to them in a mean way.“ Where do you come from?” he asked.“ From the land of Canaan,” they replied.“ We’ve come to buy food.”

I call out and cry for help. But he won’t listen to me when I pray.

Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way. He guided you in the desert for these 40 years. He wanted to take your pride away. He wanted to test you to know what was in your hearts. He wanted to see whether you would obey his commands.

He heard that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. So he began to shout,“ Jesus! Son of David! Have mercy on me!”Many people commanded him to stop. They told him to be quiet. But he shouted even louder,“ Son of David! Have mercy on me!”

Lord, my Rock, I call out to you. Pay attention to me. If you remain silent, I will die. I will be like those who go down into the grave.
