Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,

Some Pharisees and some teachers of the law came from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked,

Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,

Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked him,

Then Jesus was approached by Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem, who asked,

Then some Pharisees and scribes* came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,

Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,

Then there come to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees and scribes, saying,

Then Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked,

Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,

Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying,

The experts in the law who came down from Jerusalem said,“ He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and,“ By the ruler of demons he casts out demons.”

Then the experts in the law and the Pharisees began to think to themselves,“ Who is this man who is uttering blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

“ Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You cross land and sea to make one convert, and when you get one, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves!“ Woe to you, blind guides, who say,‘ Whoever swears by the temple is bound by nothing. But whoever swears by the gold of the temple is bound by the oath.’Blind fools! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that makes the gold sacred?And,‘ Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing. But if anyone swears by the gift on it he is bound by the oath.’You are blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and the one who dwells in it.And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and the one who sits on it.“ Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You give a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin, yet you neglect what is more important in the law– justice, mercy, and faithfulness! You should have done these things without neglecting the others.Blind guides! You strain out a gnat yet swallow a camel!“ Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of greed and self- indulgence.Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside may become clean too!“ Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that look beautiful on the outside but inside are full of the bones of the dead and of everything unclean.In the same way, on the outside you look righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

For I tell you, unless your righteousness goes beyond that of the experts in the law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

“ The experts in the law and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat.

There was a great commotion, and some experts in the law from the party of the Pharisees stood up and protested strongly,“ We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”

Now on one of those days, while he was teaching, there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting nearby( who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem), and the power of the Lord was with him to heal.

But the Pharisees and their experts in the law complained to his disciples, saying,“ Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

Now the Pharisees and some of the experts in the law who came from Jerusalem gathered around him.And they saw that some of Jesus’ disciples ate their bread with unclean hands, that is, unwashed.( For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they perform a ritual washing, holding fast to the tradition of the elders.And when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. They hold fast to many other traditions: the washing of cups, pots, kettles, and dining couches.)The Pharisees and the experts in the law asked him,“ Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with unwashed hands?”He said to them,“ Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written:‘ This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrine the commandments of men.’Having no regard for the command of God, you hold fast to human tradition.”He also said to them,“ You neatly reject the commandment of God in order to set up your tradition.For Moses said,‘ Honor your father and your mother,’ and,‘ Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.’But you say that if anyone tells his father or mother,‘ Whatever help you would have received from me is corban’( that is, a gift for God),then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother.Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like this.”Then he called the crowd again and said to them,“ Listen to me, everyone, and understand.There is nothing outside of a person that can defile him by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles him.”
