原來，希律為了他弟弟菲利普的妻子希羅迪婭的緣故，曾經派人去拘捕約翰，把他捆鎖在監獄裡。希律娶了這個女人，

耶穌聽說約翰被逮捕了，就退到加利利地區。

分封王希律為了他弟弟的妻子希羅迪婭的事，以及自己所做的一切惡事，受到約翰的責備。希律在這一切事上又加了一件，就是把約翰關在監獄裡。

所以希羅迪婭對約翰懷恨在心，想要殺他，只是不能。

希羅迪婭的女兒進來跳舞，使希律和一同坐席的人都非常喜悅。王就對女孩說：「你無論想要什麼，向我求，我就會給你。」

約翰在監獄裡聽說了基督所做的事，就派自己的幾個門徒去

正在那時候，有些人前來告訴耶穌有關加利利人的事，就是彼拉多把加利利人的血與他們的祭物混在一起的事。

約翰也在撒令附近的艾嫩施洗，因為那裡水多。眾人紛紛而來受洗。原來，約翰那時候還沒有被投進監獄。
