But he said to his disciples,“ Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”The disciples did so, and everyone sat down.Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people.They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. (niv)

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,and he said to his attendants,“ This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” (niv)

Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee( that is, the Sea of Tiberias),and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick.Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.The Jewish Passover Festival was near.When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,“ Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.Philip answered him,“ It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up,“ Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”Jesus said,“ Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down( about five thousand men were there).Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples,“ Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say,“ Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself. The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them,“ Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him.“ This is a remote place,” they said,“ and it’s already very late.Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”But he answered,“ You give them something to eat.” They said to him,“ That would take more than half a year’s wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”“ How many loaves do you have?” he asked.“ Go and see.” When they found out, they said,“ Five— and two fish.”Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.They all ate and were satisfied,and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand. When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. (niv)

Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill. (niv)

I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”His disciples answered,“ Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”“ How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.“ Seven,” they replied,“ and a few small fish.”He told the crowd to sit down on the ground.Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people.They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. (niv)
