使徒們回來，把所做的事告訴耶穌，耶穌就私下帶他們離開那裏，往一座叫伯賽大的城去。眾人知道了，就跟着他去；耶穌接待他們，對他們講論上帝國的事，治好那些需要醫治的人。太陽快要下山，十二使徒進前來對他說：「請叫眾人散去，他們好往四面村莊鄉鎮裏去借宿和找吃的，因為我們這裏地方偏僻。」耶穌對他們說：「你們給他們吃吧！」他們說：「我們不過有五個餅、兩條魚，若不去為這許多人買食物就不夠。」那時，男人約有五千。耶穌對門徒說：「叫他們分組坐下，每組大約五十個人。」門徒就這樣做了，叫眾人都坐下。耶穌拿着這五個餅和兩條魚，望着天祝福，擘開，遞給門徒，擺在眾人面前。所有的人都吃，並且吃飽了。他們把剩下的碎屑收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。

那時，希律分封王聽見耶穌的名聲，就對臣僕說：「這是施洗的約翰從死人中復活，因此才有這些異能在他裏面運行。」

這些事以後，耶穌渡過加利利海，就是提比哩亞海。有一大羣人因為看見他在病人身上所行的神蹟，就跟隨他。耶穌上了山，和門徒一同坐在那裏。那時猶太人的逾越節近了。耶穌舉目看見一大羣人來，就對腓力說：「我們到哪裏去買餅給這些人吃呢？」他說這話是要考驗腓力，他自己原知道要怎樣做。腓力回答他：「就是兩百個銀幣的餅也不夠給他們每人吃一點點。」有一個門徒，就是西門‧彼得的弟弟安得烈，對耶穌說：「這裏有一個孩子，帶着五個大麥餅和兩條魚，但是分給這麼多人還算甚麼呢？」耶穌說：「你們叫大家坐下。」那地方的草多，人們就坐下，男人的數目約有五千。耶穌拿起餅來，祝謝了，就分給坐着的人，也同樣分了魚，都照他們所要的來分。他們吃飽後，耶穌對門徒說：「把剩下的碎屑收拾起來，免得糟蹋了。」他們就把那五個大麥餅的碎屑，就是大家吃剩的，收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。人們看見耶穌所行的神蹟，就說：「這真是那要到世上來的先知！」耶穌知道他們要來強迫他作王，就獨自又退到山上去了。

使徒們聚集到耶穌那裏，把一切所做的事、所傳的道全告訴他。他就說：「你們來，同我私下到荒野的地方去歇一歇。」這是因為來往的人多，他們連吃飯的時間也沒有。他們就坐船，私下往荒野的地方去。眾人看見他們走了，有許多認識他們的，就從各城步行，一同跑到那裏，比他們先趕到了。耶穌出來，見有一大羣的人，就憐憫他們，因為他們如同羊沒有牧人一般，於是開始教導他們許多事。天已經很晚，門徒進前來，說：「這地方偏僻，而且天已經很晚了，請叫眾人散去，他們好往四面的鄉鎮村莊去，自己買些東西吃。」耶穌回答他們說：「你們給他們吃吧！」門徒對他說：「我們要拿兩百個銀幣去買餅給他們吃嗎？」耶穌說：「你們有多少餅？去看看。」他們知道後就說：「有五個，還有兩條魚。」耶穌吩咐他們，叫眾人一組一組地坐在青草地上。眾人就一羣一羣地坐下，有一百的，有五十的。耶穌拿着這五個餅和兩條魚，望着天祝福，擘開餅，遞給門徒，擺在眾人面前，也把那兩條魚分給眾人。他們都吃，並且吃飽了。門徒把餅和魚的碎屑收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。吃餅的男人共有五千。

有人在這城迫害你們，就逃到另一城去。我實在告訴你們，以色列的城鎮，你們還沒有走遍，人子就要來臨。

耶穌知道了，就離開那裏，有一大羣人跟着他。他把所有的病人都治好了，

耶穌叫門徒來，說：「我憐憫這羣人，因為他們同我在這裏已經三天，沒有吃的東西了。我不願意叫他們餓着回去，恐怕他們在路上餓昏了。」門徒說：「我們在這野地，哪裏有這麼多的餅讓這許多人吃飽呢？」耶穌對他們說：「你們有多少餅？」他們說：「有七個，還有幾條小魚。」他就吩咐眾人坐在地上，拿着這七個餅和幾條魚，祝謝了，擘開，遞給門徒；門徒又遞給眾人。他們都吃，並且吃飽了，收拾剩下的碎屑，裝滿了七個筐子。吃的人中，男的有四千，還不算婦女和孩子。
