使徒们回来，把所做的事告诉耶稣，耶稣就私下带他们离开那里，往一座叫伯赛大的城去。众人知道了，就跟着他去；耶稣接待他们，对他们讲论上帝国的事，治好那些需要医治的人。太阳快要下山，十二使徒进前来对他说：“请叫众人散去，他们好往四面村庄乡镇里去借宿和找吃的，因为我们这里地方偏僻。”耶稣对他们说：“你们给他们吃吧！”他们说：“我们不过有五个饼、两条鱼，若不去为这许多人买食物就不够。”那时，男人约有五千。耶稣对门徒说：“叫他们分组坐下，每组大约五十个人。”门徒就这样做了，叫众人都坐下。耶稣拿着这五个饼和两条鱼，望着天祝福，擘开，递给门徒，摆在众人面前。所有的人都吃，并且吃饱了。他们把剩下的碎屑收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。

那时，希律分封王听见耶稣的名声，就对臣仆说：“这是施洗的约翰从死人中复活，因此才有这些异能在他里面运行。”

这些事以后，耶稣渡过加利利海，就是提比哩亚海。有一大群人因为看见他在病人身上所行的神迹，就跟随他。耶稣上了山，和门徒一同坐在那里。那时犹太人的逾越节近了。耶稣举目看见一大群人来，就对腓力说：“我们到哪里去买饼给这些人吃呢？”他说这话是要考验腓力，他自己原知道要怎样做。腓力回答他：“就是两百个银币的饼也不够给他们每人吃一点点。”有一个门徒，就是西门‧彼得的弟弟安得烈，对耶稣说：“这里有一个孩子，带着五个大麦饼和两条鱼，但是分给这么多人还算什么呢？”耶稣说：“你们叫大家坐下。”那地方的草多，人们就坐下，男人的数目约有五千。耶稣拿起饼来，祝谢了，就分给坐着的人，也同样分了鱼，都照他们所要的来分。他们吃饱后，耶稣对门徒说：“把剩下的碎屑收拾起来，免得糟蹋了。”他们就把那五个大麦饼的碎屑，就是大家吃剩的，收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。人们看见耶稣所行的神迹，就说：“这真是那要到世上来的先知！”耶稣知道他们要来强迫他作王，就独自又退到山上去了。

使徒们聚集到耶稣那里，把一切所做的事、所传的道全告诉他。他就说：“你们来，同我私下到荒野的地方去歇一歇。”这是因为来往的人多，他们连吃饭的时间也没有。他们就坐船，私下往荒野的地方去。众人看见他们走了，有许多认识他们的，就从各城步行，一同跑到那里，比他们先赶到了。耶稣出来，见有一大群的人，就怜悯他们，因为他们如同羊没有牧人一般，于是开始教导他们许多事。天已经很晚，门徒进前来，说：“这地方偏僻，而且天已经很晚了，请叫众人散去，他们好往四面的乡镇村庄去，自己买些东西吃。”耶稣回答他们说：“你们给他们吃吧！”门徒对他说：“我们要拿两百个银币去买饼给他们吃吗？”耶稣说：“你们有多少饼？去看看。”他们知道后就说：“有五个，还有两条鱼。”耶稣吩咐他们，叫众人一组一组地坐在青草地上。众人就一群一群地坐下，有一百的，有五十的。耶稣拿着这五个饼和两条鱼，望着天祝福，擘开饼，递给门徒，摆在众人面前，也把那两条鱼分给众人。他们都吃，并且吃饱了。门徒把饼和鱼的碎屑收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。吃饼的男人共有五千。

有人在这城迫害你们，就逃到另一城去。我实在告诉你们，以色列的城镇，你们还没有走遍，人子就要来临。

耶稣知道了，就离开那里，有一大群人跟着他。他把所有的病人都治好了，

耶稣叫门徒来，说：“我怜悯这群人，因为他们同我在这里已经三天，没有吃的东西了。我不愿意叫他们饿着回去，恐怕他们在路上饿昏了。”门徒说：“我们在这野地，哪里有这么多的饼让这许多人吃饱呢？”耶稣对他们说：“你们有多少饼？”他们说：“有七个，还有几条小鱼。”他就吩咐众人坐在地上，拿着这七个饼和几条鱼，祝谢了，擘开，递给门徒；门徒又递给众人。他们都吃，并且吃饱了，收拾剩下的碎屑，装满了七个筐子。吃的人中，男的有四千，还不算妇女和孩子。
