使徒回來，將他們所作的一切事向耶穌敘說，耶穌就帶他們暗暗退到一座城叫伯賽大。但羣眾知道了，就跟着他。耶穌歡迎他們，對他們講論上帝的國，醫治那些需要治療的人。日頭開始快平西了；那十二個人就上前來，對耶穌說：『請解散羣眾，他們好往四圍村莊鄉下去投宿，找喫的；因為我們這裏、是在荒野地方。』耶穌對他們說：『你們、給他們喫。』他們說：『若不去為這羣眾民買食物，我們就不過有五個餅兩條魚。』當時約有五千人。耶穌就對門徒說：『叫他們一排一排地坐下，每一排大約有五十個人。』他們就這樣作，叫眾人都坐下。耶穌便拿這五個餅兩條魚，望着天祝頌，擘開，連續地給門徒，去擺在羣眾面前。眾人就喫，並且都喫飽了；那剩下來的碎片兒、撿起來有十二籃子。

當那時候、分封王希律聽見耶穌的名聲，就對臣僕說：『這是施洗者約翰；他從死人中活了起來，故此才有這些異能運行在他身上。』

這些事以後，耶穌往加利利海、就是提庇哩亞海、那邊去。有一大羣人、因為見他在病人身上所行的神迹，就直跟從他。耶穌卻上了山，同他的門徒坐在那裏。那時猶太人的節期、逾越節、近了。耶穌舉目，見一大羣人直向他跟前來，就對腓力說：『我們要從哪裏買餅、讓這些人喫呢？』他說這話、是要試試腓力；因為他自己已經知道將要怎麼辦了。腓力回答耶穌說：『二百日工錢的餅讓各人拿一點兒，也是不夠他們喫啊。』門徒中有一個人、西門彼得的兄弟安得烈、就對耶穌說：『這裏有一個孩童有五個大麥餅和兩條小魚；只有這一點兒要給這麼多的人，還算得甚麼？』耶穌說：『叫人坐下！』那地方原有很多草。人就坐下，數目約有五千。於是耶穌拿了餅，祝謝，分給坐着的人；小魚也這樣，隨着他們所願意要的。眾人既喫飽了，耶穌就對門徒說：『把剩下來的碎片兒收集起來，免得有蹧蹋的。』他們便收集起來，將喫的人所剩下來的碎片兒裝滿了十二個籃子。人看見耶穌所行的神迹，就說：『這個人真是那要到世界上來的神言人哪！』於是耶穌覺得人將要來抓住他、使他做王，就再退到山上，自己單獨在那裏。

使徒聚集到耶穌跟前，將他們所作所教訓的一切事報告他。耶穌就對他們說：『來吧，你們自己暗暗兒到荒野地方去，歇息一會兒。』（這是因為來往的人多，他們連喫飯也沒有閒暇工夫。）他們就坐船、暗暗兒往荒野地方去了。眾人看見他們走了，有許多人認得他們，便從各城步行，一齊向那裏跑，比他們先到。耶穌出了船，看見一大羣人，就憐憫他們，因為他們像羊沒有牧人一般；就教訓他們許多事。時候已晚，門徒就上他跟前來，說：『這地方是荒野，而且時候已晚；請解散眾人，他們好往四圍鄉下村莊裏，去自己買甚麼喫的。』耶穌回答他們說：『你們、給他們喫。』他們對他說：『我們要去買二百日工錢的餅，給他們喫麼？』耶穌問他們說：『你們有多少餅？去看看！』他們知道了，就說：『五個，還有兩條魚。』耶穌就吩咐他們大家、要一組一組地坐在青草地上。他們就一排一排地坐下，有一百的，有五十的。耶穌便拿這五個餅兩條魚，望着天祝頌，擘開了餅，連續地給門徒，去擺在眾人面前；他也把那兩條魚分給他們。眾人都喫，並且喫飽了；他們就把碎片兒撿起來，十二個籃子滿滿的！另外還有碎魚。喫餅的有五千人。

人在這城裏逼迫你們，你們要逃到別的城。我實在告訴你們，以色列的城市、你們還沒走完，人子就到了。

耶穌知道了，就從那裏退去。有許多人跟着他；他把他們都治好了；

耶穌叫門徒來，說：『我憐憫這一羣人，因為他們同我在一起已經三天了，也沒有甚麼可喫的。要解散他們空着肚子走嘛，我又不願意，恐怕他們在路上暈倒了。』門徒對他說：『我們在這野地哪裏有這麼多餅，讓這麼多的羣眾喫飽呢？』耶穌對他們說：『你們有多少餅？』他們說：『七個，還有幾條小魚。』他就囑咐羣眾坐在地上，便拿着那七個餅和那幾條魚，祝謝，擘開，連續地給門徒，門徒又給羣眾。眾人都喫，並且喫飽了；他們把剩下的碎片兒撿起來，七筐子滿滿！喫的人、除了婦女孩子、共有四千。
