厥後、耶穌渡加利利海、亦名諦比略湖。既渡、眾睹其醫病諸靈蹟、群趨若鶩。耶穌登山、與門徒共坐。時近猶太人之免難節。耶穌舉目、見眾就之、顧謂斐理伯曰：『何由市餅、以食斯眾？』彼作此言、蓋試之耳、胸中固有成竹也。斐理伯曰：『即有銀錢二百以市餅、亦不足使人人咸得少飽。』徒中有安德烈者即西門伯鐸祿之兄、謂耶穌曰：『有童子攜有麰餅五枚、小魚二尾。以供斯眾、何濟於事？』耶穌曰：『令眾坐。』其地有草如茵、眾即席地而坐、數約五千。耶穌取餅祝謝、分與坐眾、各隨所欲、魚亦如之。眾既充飫、耶穌諭徒曰：『收拾餘屑、莫令狼藉。』收之則五餅之屑、充十二筐。人見所行聖跡、乃曰：『斯真將臨之先知！』耶穌燭眾意欲擁之為王、乃獨自遁跡山中。

宗徒既集、以奉命傳道及所行事報耶穌、耶穌曰：『盍相偕密赴曠野稍憩。』以往來人眾、不遑暇食。乃登舟潛行、眾見其行、有識之者、自各城步行、先往俟之。耶穌出見芸芸眾生、如無牧之羊群、惻然憫之、乃多方教導。日暮、門徒進曰：『荒郊時晏、請遣眾散、自往四鄉市食。』耶穌曰：『爾當食之。』門徒曰：『豈欲吾人購餅二十金以食之乎？』耶穌曰：『先視存餅。』既悉、報曰：『餅五枚、魚二尾而已。』耶穌諭徒令眾成列、席草而坐、眾如命、有百人為一列者、有五十人者、坐定、耶穌持餅與魚、仰天祝福、分餅授徒置眾前、魚亦然：眾食且飽、拾餅屑殘魚盈十二筐；食者數約五千。

一邑見逐、則投他邑；吾實語爾、義塞諸邑、爾未遍歷、而人子已臨矣。

耶穌知之、即引退、人多從之、耶穌悉治其病、

耶穌召其徒曰：『我憐斯眾、從我三日、且無以食；雅不欲令其枵腹而歸、恐踣於途。』徒曰：『在斯曠野、安得如許餅餌、以享若眾？』耶穌問曰：『爾有餅幾許？』曰：『七、尚有小魚數尾。』乃命眾席地坐、持七餅及小魚、祝謝畢、剖而授徒、徒以授眾；咸食且飽、拾其餘屑盈七筐。除婦孺外、計食者四千人。
