使徒回來，將所做的事告訴耶穌，耶穌就帶他們暗暗地離開那裏，往一座城去；那城名叫伯賽大。但眾人知道了，就跟着他去；耶穌便接待他們，對他們講論神國的道，醫治那些需醫的人。日頭快要平西，十二個門徒來對他說：「請叫眾人散開，他們好往四面鄉村裏去借宿找吃的，因為我們這裏是野地。」耶穌說：「你們給他們吃吧！」門徒說：「我們不過有五個餅，兩條魚，若不去為這許多人買食物就不夠。」那時，人數約有五千。耶穌對門徒說：「叫他們一排一排地坐下，每排大約五十個人。」門徒就如此行，叫眾人都坐下。耶穌拿着這五個餅，兩條魚，望着天祝福，擘開，遞給門徒，擺在眾人面前。他們就吃，並且都吃飽了；把剩下的零碎收拾起來，裝滿了十二籃子。

那時，分封的王希律聽見耶穌的名聲，就對臣僕說：「這是施洗的約翰從死裏復活，所以這些異能從他裏面發出來。」

這事以後，耶穌渡過加利利海，就是提比哩亞海。有許多人因為看見他在病人身上所行的神蹟，就跟隨他。耶穌上了山，和門徒一同坐在那裏。那時猶太人的逾越節近了。耶穌舉目看見許多人來，就對腓力說：「我們從哪裏買餅叫這些人吃呢？」（他說這話是要試驗腓力；他自己原知道要怎樣行。）腓力回答說：「就是二十兩銀子的餅，叫他們各人吃一點也是不夠的。」有一個門徒，就是西門‧彼得的兄弟安得烈，對耶穌說：「在這裏有一個孩童，帶着五個大麥餅、兩條魚，只是分給這許多人還算甚麼呢？」耶穌說：「你們叫眾人坐下。」原來那地方的草多，眾人就坐下，數目約有五千。耶穌拿起餅來，祝謝了，就分給那坐着的人；分魚也是這樣，都隨着他們所要的。他們吃飽了，耶穌對門徒說：「把剩下的零碎收拾起來，免得有糟蹋的。」他們便將那五個大麥餅的零碎，就是眾人吃了剩下的，收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。眾人看見耶穌所行的神蹟，就說：「這真是那要到世間來的先知！」耶穌既知道眾人要來強逼他作王，就獨自又退到山上去了。

使徒聚集到耶穌那裏，將一切所做的事、所傳的道全告訴他。他就說：「你們來，同我暗暗地到曠野地方去歇一歇。」這是因為來往的人多，他們連吃飯也沒有工夫。他們就坐船，暗暗地往曠野地方去。眾人看見他們去，有許多認識他們的，就從各城步行，一同跑到那裏，比他們先趕到了。耶穌出來，見有許多的人，就憐憫他們，因為他們如同羊沒有牧人一般，於是開口教訓他們許多道理。天已經晚了，門徒進前來，說：「這是野地，天已經晚了，請叫眾人散開，他們好往四面鄉村裏去，自己買甚麼吃。」耶穌回答說：「你們給他們吃吧。」門徒說：「我們可以去買二十兩銀子的餅給他們吃嗎？」耶穌說：「你們有多少餅，可以去看看。」他們知道了，就說：「五個餅，兩條魚。」耶穌吩咐他們，叫眾人一幫一幫地坐在青草地上。眾人就一排一排地坐下，有一百一排的，有五十一排的。耶穌拿着這五個餅，兩條魚，望着天祝福，擘開餅，遞給門徒，擺在眾人面前，也把那兩條魚分給眾人。他們都吃，並且吃飽了。門徒就把碎餅碎魚收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。吃餅的男人共有五千。

有人在這城裏逼迫你們，就逃到那城裏去。我實在告訴你們，以色列的城邑，你們還沒有走遍，人子就到了。

耶穌知道了，就離開那裏，有許多人跟着他。他把其中有病的人都治好了；

耶穌叫門徒來，說：「我憐憫這眾人；因為他們同我在這裏已經三天，也沒有吃的了。我不願意叫他們餓着回去，恐怕在路上困乏。」門徒說：「我們在這野地，哪裏有這麼多的餅叫這許多人吃飽呢？」耶穌說：「你們有多少餅？」他們說：「有七個，還有幾條小魚。」他就吩咐眾人坐在地上，拿着這七個餅和幾條魚，祝謝了，擘開，遞給門徒；門徒又遞給眾人。眾人都吃，並且吃飽了，收拾剩下的零碎，裝滿了七個筐子。吃的人，除了婦女孩子，共有四千。
