使徒回来，将所做的事告诉耶稣，耶稣就带他们暗暗地离开那里，往一座城去；那城名叫伯赛大。但众人知道了，就跟着他去；耶稣便接待他们，对他们讲论神国的道，医治那些需医的人。日头快要平西，十二个门徒来对他说：“请叫众人散开，他们好往四面乡村里去借宿找吃的，因为我们这里是野地。”耶稣说：“你们给他们吃吧！”门徒说：“我们不过有五个饼，两条鱼，若不去为这许多人买食物就不够。”那时，人数约有五千。耶稣对门徒说：“叫他们一排一排地坐下，每排大约五十个人。”门徒就如此行，叫众人都坐下。耶稣拿着这五个饼，两条鱼，望着天祝福，擘开，递给门徒，摆在众人面前。他们就吃，并且都吃饱了；把剩下的零碎收拾起来，装满了十二篮子。

那时，分封的王希律听见耶稣的名声，就对臣仆说：“这是施洗的约翰从死里复活，所以这些异能从他里面发出来。”

这事以后，耶稣渡过加利利海，就是提比哩亚海。有许多人因为看见他在病人身上所行的神迹，就跟随他。耶稣上了山，和门徒一同坐在那里。那时犹太人的逾越节近了。耶稣举目看见许多人来，就对腓力说：“我们从哪里买饼叫这些人吃呢？”（他说这话是要试验腓力；他自己原知道要怎样行。）腓力回答说：“就是二十两银子的饼，叫他们各人吃一点也是不够的。”有一个门徒，就是西门彼得的兄弟安得烈，对耶稣说：“在这里有一个孩童，带着五个大麦饼、两条鱼，只是分给这许多人还算什么呢？”耶稣说：“你们叫众人坐下。”原来那地方的草多，众人就坐下，数目约有五千。耶稣拿起饼来，祝谢了，就分给那坐着的人；分鱼也是这样，都随着他们所要的。他们吃饱了，耶稣对门徒说：“把剩下的零碎收拾起来，免得有糟蹋的。”他们便将那五个大麦饼的零碎，就是众人吃了剩下的，收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。众人看见耶稣所行的神迹，就说：“这真是那要到世间来的先知！”耶稣既知道众人要来强逼他作王，就独自又退到山上去了。

使徒聚集到耶稣那里，将一切所做的事、所传的道全告诉他。他就说：“你们来，同我暗暗地到旷野地方去歇一歇。”这是因为来往的人多，他们连吃饭也没有工夫。他们就坐船，暗暗地往旷野地方去。众人看见他们去，有许多认识他们的，就从各城步行，一同跑到那里，比他们先赶到了。耶稣出来，见有许多的人，就怜悯他们，因为他们如同羊没有牧人一般，于是开口教训他们许多道理。天已经晚了，门徒进前来，说：“这是野地，天已经晚了，请叫众人散开，他们好往四面乡村里去，自己买什么吃。”耶稣回答说：“你们给他们吃吧。”门徒说：“我们可以去买二十两银子的饼给他们吃吗？”耶稣说：“你们有多少饼，可以去看看。”他们知道了，就说：“五个饼，两条鱼。”耶稣吩咐他们，叫众人一帮一帮地坐在青草地上。众人就一排一排地坐下，有一百一排的，有五十一排的。耶稣拿着这五个饼，两条鱼，望着天祝福，擘开饼，递给门徒，摆在众人面前，也把那两条鱼分给众人。他们都吃，并且吃饱了。门徒就把碎饼碎鱼收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。吃饼的男人共有五千。

有人在这城里逼迫你们，就逃到那城里去。我实在告诉你们，以色列的城邑，你们还没有走遍，人子就到了。

耶稣知道了，就离开那里，有许多人跟着他。他把其中有病的人都治好了；

耶稣叫门徒来，说：“我怜悯这众人；因为他们同我在这里已经三天，也没有吃的了。我不愿意叫他们饿着回去，恐怕在路上困乏。”门徒说：“我们在这野地，哪里有这么多的饼叫这许多人吃饱呢？”耶稣说：“你们有多少饼？”他们说：“有七个，还有几条小鱼。”他就吩咐众人坐在地上，拿着这七个饼和几条鱼，祝谢了，擘开，递给门徒；门徒又递给众人。众人都吃，并且吃饱了，收拾剩下的零碎，装满了七个筐子。吃的人，除了妇女孩子，共有四千。
