使徒们回来，把他们所做的事都告诉了耶稣。耶稣就带着他们，悄悄地退往一个叫做伯赛达的城去。可是众人知道了，就跟着他去。耶稣欢迎他们，向他们讲说有关神国的事，并且使那些需要医治的人得痊愈。太阳开始平西的时候，十二使徒前来对耶稣说：“请遣散人群，好让他们到周围的村庄和田舍去借宿、找食物，因为我们这里是个荒僻的地方。”但耶稣对他们说：“你们给他们吃的吧。”他们说：“我们只有五个饼和两条鱼，除非我们去为全体民众买食物。”当时，男人就约有五千。耶稣对他的门徒们说：“叫他们分组坐下，每组约五十人。”门徒们就如此行，叫大家都坐下。耶稣拿起这五个饼和两条鱼，抬头望天，祝福了，然后掰开，不断递给门徒们，让他们分给众人。大家吃了，并且都吃饱了。他们把剩下的碎块收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。

那时候，分封王希律听到耶稣的消息，就对他的臣仆说：“这个人是施洗者约翰从死人中复活了！所以这些能力在他里面做工。”

这些事以后，耶稣渡过加利利湖，也就是太巴列湖，到对岸去。有一大群人，因为看到他在病人身上所行的神迹，就跟随他。耶稣上了山，与他的门徒们在那里坐下。那时犹太人的逾越节快到了。耶稣举目观看，见一大群人向他走来，就对腓力说：“我们从哪里买饼给这些人吃呢？”他说这话是要试试腓力，其实他自己已经知道要做什么了。腓力回答：“就是两百个银币的饼，也不够每个人吃一小块！”他的一个门徒，就是西门彼得的弟弟安得烈，对耶稣说：“这里有个孩子，带了五个大麦饼和两条鱼。可是对这么多人，这些算什么呢？”耶稣说：“让他们坐下来。”那地方草多，他们坐了下来；男人的数目约有五千。耶稣就拿起饼来，祝谢以后，分给那些坐着的人，把鱼也如此分了，他们要多少就给多少。大家吃饱了以后，耶稣就对他的门徒们说：“把剩下的碎块收拾起来，免得浪费。”他们就把大家吃剩的那五个大麦饼的碎块收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。众人看见耶稣所行的神迹，就说：“这个人确实是那位要来到世上的先知！”耶稣看出他们要来强迫他做王，就又独自退到山上去了。

使徒们聚集到耶稣那里，把他们所做的和教导的一切告诉了他。耶稣对他们说：“来，你们自己单独到一个荒僻的地方休息一会儿吧。”这是因为来往的人多，他们连吃饭的时间也没有。于是他们悄悄地坐船出发，往一个荒僻的地方去。可是众人看见他们离开了，并且有许多人认出他们，就从各城镇一起徒步赶往那里，而且比他们先到了。耶稣下了船，看见一大群人，就对他们动了怜悯之心，因为他们像羊没有牧人那样。耶稣就开始教导他们很多事。天已经晚了，他的门徒们来到耶稣面前，说：“这是个荒僻的地方，而且天已经晚了。请遣散大家，好让他们到周围的田舍和村庄去，为自己买些东西吃。”但耶稣回答他们，说：“你们给他们吃的吧。”门徒们说：“要我们去买两百个银币的饼给他们吃吗？”耶稣问他们：“你们有多少饼呢？去看看。”他们察看后，就说：“有五个，还有两条鱼。”耶稣吩咐他们，叫众人一组一组地坐在青草地上。众人就一群一群地坐了下来，有的一百人，有的五十人。耶稣拿起这五个饼和两条鱼，抬头望天，祝福了，然后把饼掰开，不断递给他的门徒们，让他们分给众人。他把两条鱼也分给大家。大家都吃了，并且吃饱了。他们把饼和鱼的碎块收拾起来，装满了十二个篮子。吃饼的人，男人就有五千。

他们在这城逼迫你们，你们就逃到别的城去。我确实地告诉你们：在你们走遍以色列的城镇之前，人子必定来临。

耶稣知道了，就离开那里。有一大群人跟随他，耶稣使他们都痊愈了，

耶稣召来他的门徒们，说：“我怜悯这群人，因为他们与我在一起已经三天了，也没有什么东西吃。我不愿意让他们饿着肚子回去，恐怕他们在路上晕倒。”门徒们说：“我们在旷野，从哪里得这么多的食物让这么大一群人吃饱呢？”耶稣问他们：“你们有多少饼？”他们回答说：“七个，还有几条小鱼。”耶稣就吩咐众人坐在地上，于是拿起这七个饼和几条小鱼，祝谢以后，掰开，不断递给门徒们，他们又分给众人。大家都吃了，并且吃饱了。然后，他们把剩下的碎块收拾起来，装满了七个筐子。吃的人，不算妇女和孩子，就有四千。
