使徒回來後，向耶穌報告了他們所行的事。隨後耶穌帶著他們悄悄地來到伯賽大城。但百姓發現了耶穌的行蹤，隨即也趕來了。耶穌接待他們，向他們宣講天國的福音，醫好了有病的人。黃昏將近，十二個使徒過來對耶穌說：「請遣散眾人，好讓他們到附近的村莊去借宿找吃的，因為這地方很偏僻。」耶穌對他們說：「你們給他們吃的吧。」使徒們說：「我們只有五個餅和兩條魚，除非我們去買食物才夠這麼一大群人吃。」當時那裡約有五千男人。耶穌便對使徒說：「讓這些人分組坐下，每組大約五十人。」於是使徒安排眾人都坐好。耶穌拿起那五個餅、兩條魚，舉目望著天祝謝後，掰開遞給門徒，讓他們分給眾人。大家都吃飽了，把剩下的零碎收拾起來，竟裝滿了十二個籃子。

分封王希律聽見耶穌的名聲，就對臣僕說：「這個人是施洗者約翰！他從死裡復活了，所以能夠行這些神蹟。」

事後，耶穌渡過加利利湖，就是提比哩亞海。許多人因為見過耶穌治病的神蹟，就跟隨了祂。耶穌到了山上，與門徒一起坐下來。那時，猶太人的逾越節快到了。耶穌舉目看見一大群人向祂走來，就對腓力說：「我們到哪裡去買餅給他們吃呢？」祂這樣說是想試試腓力，其實祂知道應該怎麼做。腓力回答說：「就算買二百個銀幣的餅，也不夠他們每人一口啊！」另外一個門徒——西門·彼得的弟弟安得烈對耶穌說：「這裡有個小孩子帶了五個大麥餅和兩條魚。不過，這麼多人，這一點東西實在無濟於事。」耶穌說：「你們叫大家坐下。」那地方草很多，眾人便坐下來，當時在場的男人大約有五千。耶穌拿起餅來祝謝後，分給坐著的眾人，然後又照樣分魚，眾人可以隨意吃。他們吃飽後，耶穌對門徒說：「把剩下的零碎收拾起來，免得浪費。」他們便把大家吃剩的那五個大麥餅的零碎收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。大家看見耶穌行的這個神蹟，都說：「這人真是那位要來到世上的先知！」耶穌知道他們想強行立祂作王，便獨自退到山上。

使徒們聚集在耶穌身邊，向祂報告事工和傳道的經過。耶穌對他們說：「你們私下跟我到僻靜的地方去歇一會兒吧。」因為當時來來往往找他們的人實在太多，他們連吃飯的時間都沒有。他們乘船悄悄地到了一處僻靜的地方。可是有許多人看見他們離開，認出了他們，便從各城鎮步行趕往那裡，比他們先到達。耶穌一下船，看見這一大群人好像沒有牧人的羊，心裡憐憫他們，於是教導了他們許多道理。天色晚了，門徒過來對耶穌說：「時候已經不早了，這裡又是荒郊野外，請遣散眾人，好讓他們到周圍的村莊去自己買些吃的。」耶穌說：「你們給他們吃的吧。」門徒說：「我們哪來這麼多錢買東西給他們吃啊？」耶穌說：「看看你們有多少餅。」他們察看後，說：「有五個餅和兩條魚。」耶穌吩咐門徒叫大家分組坐在草地上。於是眾人坐下，有的五十人一組，有的一百人一組。耶穌拿起那五個餅、兩條魚，舉目望著天祝謝後，掰開遞給門徒，讓他們分給眾人。祂又照樣把那兩條魚分給眾人。大家都吃了，並且吃飽了。門徒把剩下的碎餅、碎魚收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。當時吃餅的男人有五千。

如果你們在一個地方遭迫害，就避到另一個地方。我實在告訴你們，沒等你們走遍以色列的城鎮，人子就來了。

耶穌知道了，就離開那個地方。很多人跟隨祂，耶穌醫好了其中所有患病的人，

耶穌把門徒召集過來，對他們說：「我憐憫這些人，他們跟我在一起已經三天，沒有任何吃的。我不願讓他們餓著肚子回去，以免他們在路上體力不支。」門徒說：「在這荒野，我們到哪裡找足夠的食物給這麼多人吃呢？」耶穌問：「你們有多少餅？」門徒答道：「七個，還有幾條小魚。」耶穌便吩咐大家坐在地上。祂拿著那七個餅和幾條魚祝謝後，掰開，遞給門徒，門徒再分給大家。大家都吃了，並且吃飽了，剩下的零碎裝滿了七個筐子。當時吃飯的，除了婦女和小孩，共有四千男人。
