And he said,“ Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.

But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them,“ Do you take offense at this?

“ You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,

but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles,but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are,

And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

They said,“ Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say,‘ I have come down from heaven’?”

And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,“ Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed( and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

This is the Moses who said to the Israelites,‘ God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.’This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. He received living oracles to give to us.Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt,

Moses said,‘ The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you.And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.’

King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name had become known. Some said,“ John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”

Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nation, the servant of rulers:“ Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall prostrate themselves; because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
