He also said,“ Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, asked them,“ Does this offend you?

“ You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are always resisting the Holy Spirit. As your ancestors did, you do also.Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.

but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles.Yet to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God,because God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.Brothers and sisters, consider your calling: Not many were wise from a human perspective, not many powerful, not many of noble birth.Instead, God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong.God has chosen what is insignificant and despised in the world— what is viewed as nothing— to bring to nothing what is viewed as something,

and blessed is the one who isn’t offended by me.”

They were saying,“ Isn’t this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say,‘ I have come down from heaven’?”

Then Simeon blessed them and told his mother Mary,“ Indeed, this child is destined to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be opposed—and a sword will pierce your own soul— that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

He will be a sanctuary; but for the two houses of Israel, he will be a stone to stumble over and a rock to trip over, and a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

“ This is the Moses who said to the Israelites: God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.He is the one who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors. He received living oracles to give to us.Our ancestors were unwilling to obey him. Instead, they pushed him aside, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.

Moses said: The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to everything he tells you.And everyone who does not listen to that prophet will be completely cut off from the people.

King Herod heard about it, because Jesus’s name had become well known. Some said,“ John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that’s why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

This is what the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, says to one who is despised, to one abhorred by people, to a servant of rulers:“ Kings will see, princes will stand up, and they will all bow down because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel— and he has chosen you.”

Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren’t his sisters here with us?” So they were offended by him.

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him.
