When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching;

Jesus went out from there and* came into His hometown; and His disciples* followed Him.And when the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying,“ Where did this man learn these things, and what is this wisdom that has been given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands?Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are His sisters not here with us?” And they took offense at Him.Jesus said to them,“ A prophet is not dishonored except in his hometown and among his own relatives, and in his own household.”And He could not do any miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.And He was amazed at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages, teaching.

Jesus was going about in all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.

He came to His own, and His own people did not accept Him.

And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.And the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him. And He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:“ The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed,To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”And He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all the people in the synagogue were intently directed at Him.Now He began to say to them,“ Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”And all the people were speaking well of Him, and admiring the gracious words which were coming from His lips; and yet they were saying,“ Is this not Joseph’s son?”And He said to them,“ No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me:‘ Physician, heal yourself! All the miracles that we heard were done in Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’ ”But He said,“ Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown.But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a severe famine came over all the land;and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.And there were many with leprosy in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things;and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and brought Him to the crest of the hill on which their city had been built, so that they could throw Him down from the cliff.But He passed through their midst and went on His way.

and came and settled in a city called Nazareth. This happened so that what was spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled:“ He will be called a Nazarene.”

After three days Paul called together those who were the leading men of the Jews, and when they came together, he began saying to them,“ Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was handed over to the Romans as a prisoner from Jerusalem.And when they had examined me, they were willing to release me because there were no grounds for putting me to death.But when the Jews objected, I was forced to appeal to Caesar, not that I had any accusation against my nation.For this reason, therefore, I requested to see you and to speak with you, since I am wearing this chain for the sake of the hope of Israel.”They said to him,“ We have neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor has any of the brothers come here and reported or spoken anything bad about you.But we desire to hear from you what your views are; for regarding this sect, it is known to us that it is spoken against everywhere.”When they had set a day for Paul, people came to him at his lodging in large numbers; and he was explaining to them by solemnly testifying about the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them concerning Jesus, from both the Law of Moses and from the Prophets, from morning until evening.Some were being persuaded by the things said by Paul, but others would not believe.And when they disagreed with one another, they began leaving after Paul said one parting statement:“ The Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers,saying,‘ Go to this people and say,“ You will keep on hearing, and will not understand; And you will keep on seeing, and will not perceive;For the hearts of this people have become insensitive, And with their ears they hardly hear, And they have closed their eyes; Otherwise they might see with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart and return, And I would heal them.” ’Therefore, let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will also listen.”

I will proclaim Your name to my brothers; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.

I have proclaimed good news of righteousness in the great congregation; Behold, I will not restrain my lips, Lord, You know.I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your mercy and Your truth from the great congregation.

Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus.

Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said,“ It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first. Since you repudiate it and consider yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.
