當時人數約有四千。耶穌解散了群眾，

那一天，耶穌從房子裡出來，坐在海邊。

事後耶穌立刻催門徒上船，叫他們先渡到對岸的伯賽大去，等他自己叫眾人散開。

彼得說：“請你給我們解釋這個比喻吧。”耶穌說：“你們還是不明白嗎？

於是他的門徒中有幾個彼此說：“他對我們說：‘不久，你們不會看見我；再過不久，你們還要看見我。’又說：‘因為我到父那裡去。’這是甚麼意思呢？”他們又說：“他所說的‘不久’，是甚麼意思呢？我們不曉得他在講甚麼。”耶穌知道他們想問他，就說：“我所說的‘不久，你們不會看見我；再過不久，你們還要看見我’，你們為了這話彼此議論嗎？我實實在在告訴你們，你們要痛哭哀號，世人卻要歡喜；你們要憂愁，但你們的憂愁要變為喜樂。

他回答：“天國的奧祕，只給你們知道，卻不給他們知道。

耶穌進了房子，他們來到他那裡。耶穌問他們：“你們信我能作這些事嗎？”他們回答：“主啊，我們信。”

耶穌離開群眾，進了屋子，門徒就來問他這比喻的意思。

耶穌立刻催門徒上船，叫他們先到對岸去，他卻留下來叫群眾散開。

耶穌解散了群眾，就上了船，來到馬加丹地區。

不用比喻，就不對他們講。只有單獨和自己的門徒在一起的時候，才把一切解釋給他們聽。
