Then He taught them many things by parables, and said to them in His teaching:“ Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow.And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds of the air came and devoured it.Some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth.But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away.And some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no crop.But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop that sprang up, increased and produced: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”And He said to them,“ He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, that He departed from there.

And they sought to lay hands on Him, but feared the multitude, for they knew He had spoken the parable against them. So they left Him and went away.

And with many such parables He spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it.

And He said to them,“ Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?

Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And he came to him, and said to him:“ There were two men in one city, one rich and the other poor.The rich man had exceedingly many flocks and herds.But the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb which he had bought and nourished; and it grew up together with him and with his children. It ate of his own food and drank from his own cup and lay in his bosom; and it was like a daughter to him.And a traveler came to the rich man, who refused to take from his own flock and from his own herd to prepare one for the wayfaring man who had come to him; but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”So David’s anger was greatly aroused against the man, and he said to Nathan,“ As the Lord lives, the man who has done this shall surely die!And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, because he did this thing and because he had no pity.”Then Nathan said to David,“ You are the man! Thus says the Lord God of Israel:‘ I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.

All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them,that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:“ I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world.”

“ A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it.Some fell on rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture.And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it.But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold.” When He had said these things He cried,“ He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

And the disciples came and said to Him,“ Why do You speak to them in parables?”He answered and said to them,“ Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.

Then I said,“ Ah, Lord God! They say of me,‘ Does he not speak parables?’”

“ Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near.

In that day one shall take up a proverb against you, And lament with a bitter lamentation, saying:‘ We are utterly destroyed! He has changed the heritage of my people; How He has removed it from me! To a turncoat He has divided our fields.’”

Then Peter said to Him,“ Lord, do You speak this parable only to us, or to all people?”

“ The trees once went forth to anoint a king over them. And they said to the olive tree,‘ Reign over us!’But the olive tree said to them,‘ Should I cease giving my oil, With which they honor God and men, And go to sway over trees?’“ Then the trees said to the fig tree,‘ You come and reign over us!’But the fig tree said to them,‘ Should I cease my sweetness and my good fruit, And go to sway over trees?’“ Then the trees said to the vine,‘ You come and reign over us!’But the vine said to them,‘ Should I cease my new wine, Which cheers both God and men, And go to sway over trees?’“ Then all the trees said to the bramble,‘ You come and reign over us!’And the bramble said to the trees,‘ If in truth you anoint me as king over you, Then come and take shelter in my shade; But if not, let fire come out of the bramble And devour the cedars of Lebanon!’“ Now therefore, if you have acted in truth and sincerity in making Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him as he deserves—for my father fought for you, risked his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian;but you have risen up against my father’s house this day, and killed his seventy sons on one stone, and made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother—if then you have acted in truth and sincerity with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you.But if not, let fire come from Abimelech and devour the men of Shechem and Beth Millo; and let fire come from the men of Shechem and from Beth Millo and devour Abimelech!”

He built a tower in its midst, And also made a winepress in it; So He expected it to bring forth good grapes, But it brought forth wild grapes.“ And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, Judge, please, between Me and My vineyard.What more could have been done to My vineyard That I have not done in it? Why then, when I expected it to bring forth good grapes, Did it bring forth wild grapes?And now, please let Me tell you what I will do to My vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be burned; And break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down.I will lay it waste; It shall not be pruned or dug, But there shall come up briers and thorns. I will also command the clouds That they rain no rain on it.”For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, And the men of Judah are His pleasant plant. He looked for justice, but behold, oppression; For righteousness, but behold, a cry for help.

“ These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.

So He spoke this parable to them, saying:“ What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them,‘ Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.

So He called them to Himself and said to them in parables:“ How can Satan cast out Satan?

Then He began to speak to them in parables:“ A man planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a place for the wine vat and built a tower. And he leased it to vinedressers and went into a far country.

And utter a parable to the rebellious house, and say to them,‘ Thus says the Lord GOD:“ Put on a pot, set it on, And also pour water into it.Gather pieces of meat in it, Every good piece, The thigh and the shoulder. Fill it with choice cuts;Take the choice of the flock. Also pile fuel bones under it, Make it boil well, And let the cuts simmer in it.”‘ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:“ Woe to the bloody city, To the pot whose scum is in it, And whose scum is not gone from it! Bring it out piece by piece, On which no lot has fallen.For her blood is in her midst; She set it on top of a rock; She did not pour it on the ground, To cover it with dust.That it may raise up fury and take vengeance, I have set her blood on top of a rock, That it may not be covered.”‘ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:“ Woe to the bloody city! I too will make the pyre great.Heap on the wood, Kindle the fire; Cook the meat well, Mix in the spices, And let the cuts be burned up.“ Then set the pot empty on the coals, That it may become hot and its bronze may burn, That its filthiness may be melted in it, That its scum may be consumed.She has grown weary with lies, And her great scum has not gone from her. Let her scum be in the fire!In your filthiness is lewdness. Because I have cleansed you, and you were not cleansed, You will not be cleansed of your filthiness anymore, Till I have caused My fury to rest upon you.I, the Lord, have spoken it; It shall come to pass, and I will do it; I will not hold back, Nor will I spare, Nor will I relent; According to your ways And according to your deeds They will judge you,” Says the Lord God.’”

And Jesus answered and spoke to them again by parables and said:

And He said,“ To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that‘ Seeing they may not see, And hearing they may not understand.’

I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old,

I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will disclose my dark saying on the harp.

“ Son of man, pose a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel,

“ Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say,‘ Woe to him who increases What is not his— how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’?
