because Demas has deserted me, since he loved this present world, and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.

The one who loves silver is never satisfied with silver, and whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with income. This too is futile.When good things increase, the ones who consume them multiply; what, then, is the profit to the owner, except to gaze at them with his eyes?

He then told them,“ Watch out and be on guard against all greed, because one’s life is not in the abundance of his possessions.”

Others are like seed sown among thorns; these are the ones who hear the word,but the worries of this age, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.For everything in the world— the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s possessions— is not from the Father, but is from the world.

“ That’s how it is with the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

For this is what the LORD says to the men of Judah and Jerusalem: Break up the unplowed ground; do not sow among the thorns.

Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”Instantly she dropped dead at his feet. When the young men came in, they found her dead, carried her out, and buried her beside her husband.Then great fear came on the whole church and on all who heard these things.

Then he told him,“ A man was giving a large banquet and invited many.At the time of the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who were invited,‘ Come, because everything is now ready.’“ But without exception they all began to make excuses. The first one said to him,‘ I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. I ask you to excuse me.’“ Another said,‘ I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m going to try them out. Place no trust in oppression or false hope in robbery. If wealth increases, don’t set your heart on it.

They have eyes full of adultery that never stop looking for sin. They seduce unstable people and have hearts trained in greed. Children under a curse!They have gone astray by abandoning the straight path and have followed the path of Balaam, the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of wickedness

There is a person without a companion, without even a son or brother, and though there is no end to all his struggles, his eyes are still not content with riches.“ Who am I struggling for,” he asks,“ and depriving myself of good things?” This too is futile and a miserable task.

Seeing that he became sad, Jesus said,“ How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”

As soon as your eyes fly to it, it disappears, for it makes wings for itself and flies like an eagle to the sky.

Anyone trusting in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like foliage.

Don’t strive for what you should eat and what you should drink, and don’t be anxious.For the Gentile world eagerly seeks all these things, and your Father knows that you need them.

Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, have plunged into Balaam’s error for profit, and have perished in Korah’s rebellion.These people are dangerous reefs at your love feasts as they eat with you without reverence. They are shepherds who only look after themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by winds; trees in late autumn— fruitless, twice dead and uprooted.

Achan replied to Joshua,“ It is true. I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel. This is what I did:When I saw among the spoils a beautiful cloak from Babylon, five pounds of silver, and a bar of gold weighing a pound and a quarter, I coveted them and took them. Gehazi, the attendant of Elisha the man of God, thought,“ My master has let this Aramean Naaman off lightly by not accepting from him what he brought. As the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”So Gehazi pursued Naaman. When Naaman saw someone running after him, he got down from the chariot to meet him and asked,“ Is everything all right?”Gehazi said,“ It’s all right. My master has sent me to say,‘ I have just now discovered that two young men from the sons of the prophets have come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them seventy-five pounds of silver and two sets of clothing.’”But Naaman insisted,“ Please, accept one hundred fifty pounds.” He urged Gehazi and then packed one hundred fifty pounds of silver in two bags with two sets of clothing. Naaman gave them to two of his attendants who carried them ahead of Gehazi.When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the gifts from them and deposited them in the house. Then he dismissed the men, and they left.Gehazi came and stood by his master.“ Where did you go, Gehazi?” Elisha asked him. He replied,“ Your servant didn’t go anywhere.”“ And my heart didn’t go when the man got down from his chariot to meet you,” Elisha said.“ Is this a time to accept silver and clothing, olive orchards and vineyards, flocks and herds, and male and female slaves?Therefore, Naaman’s skin disease will cling to you and your descendants forever.” So Gehazi went out from his presence diseased, resembling snow.

There is a sickening tragedy I have seen under the sun: wealth kept by its owner to his harm.That wealth was lost in a bad venture, so when he fathered a son, he was empty-handed.
