The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.

“ Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned.But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!

“ How dare you go on persecuting me, saying,‘ It’s his own fault’?

And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.

It doesn’t matter whether we have been circumcised or not. What counts is whether we have been transformed into a new creation.

“ But before all this occurs, there will be a time of great persecution. You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you will stand trial before kings and governors because you are my followers.But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me.So don’t worry in advance about how to answer the charges against you,for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you!Even those closest to you— your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends— will betray you. They will even kill some of you.And everyone will hate you because you are my followers.But not a hair of your head will perish!

“ If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else— your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters— yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.“ But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you.They would say,‘ There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’“ Or what king would go to war against another king without first sitting down with his counselors to discuss whether his army of 10,000 could defeat the 20,000 soldiers marching against him?And if he can’t, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of peace while the enemy is still far away.So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own.

Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining, so he said to them,“ Does this offend you?Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again?The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.But some of you do not believe me.”( For Jesus knew from the beginning which ones didn’t believe, and he knew who would betray him.)Then he said,“ That is why I said that people can’t come to me unless the Father gives them to me.”

Then Jesus said to his disciples,“ If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?

As you know, everyone from the province of Asia has deserted me— even Phygelus and Hermogenes.

Jesus replied,“ I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.

God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.“ God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers.Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.

Demas has deserted me because he loves the things of this life and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus has gone to Dalmatia.

“ I know that you live in the city where Satan has his throne, yet you have remained loyal to me. You refused to deny me even when Antipas, my faithful witness, was martyred among you there in Satan’s city.

And they were deeply offended and refused to believe in him. Then Jesus told them,“ A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family.”

The seeds on the rocky soil represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they believe for a while, then they fall away when they face temptation.

“ A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed.And everyone will hate you because you are my followers. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

These people left our churches, but they never really belonged with us; otherwise they would have stayed with us. When they left, it proved that they did not belong with us.But you are not like that, for the Holy One has given you his Spirit, and all of you know the truth.

But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand.When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God.Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive your evil thoughts,for I can see that you are full of bitter jealousy and are held captive by sin.”

Peter declared,“ Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you.”

“ If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine.If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.

For when we place our faith in Christ Jesus, there is no benefit in being circumcised or being uncircumcised. What is important is faith expressing itself in love.

Everything they say is crooked and deceitful. They refuse to act wisely or do good.

Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity.Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.

Then Jesus said,“ I chose the twelve of you, but one is a devil.”He was speaking of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, one of the Twelve, who would later betray him.

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you!Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.“ For in just a little while, the Coming One will come and not delay.And my righteous ones will live by faith. But I will take no pleasure in anyone who turns away.”But we are not like those who turn away from God to their own destruction. We are the faithful ones, whose souls will be saved.

“ Then you will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because you are my followers.And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other.

Wickedness never brings stability, but the godly have deep roots.

But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t have deep roots, they died.

Then he said to the crowd,“ If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed?

And all nations will hate you because you are my followers. But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.

For what hope do the godless have when God cuts them off and takes away their life?Will God listen to their cry when trouble comes upon them?Can they take delight in the Almighty? Can they call to God at any time?

On the way, Jesus told them,“ Tonight all of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say,‘ God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word.

But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

Those who are trying to force you to be circumcised want to look good to others. They don’t want to be persecuted for teaching that the cross of Christ alone can save.

Thieves are jealous of each other’s loot, but the godly are well rooted and bear their own fruit.

Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said,“ If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?

On judgment day many will say to me,‘ Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’But I will reply,‘ I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers.
