What I’m about to tell you is true. Many prophets and godly people wanted to see what you see. But they didn’t see it. They wanted to hear what you hear. But they didn’t hear it.

我实在告诉你们，从前有许多先知和义人要看你们所看的，却没有看见，要听你们所听的，却没有听见。”

我誠語汝、昔先知義人多欲見爾所見、而不得見、聞爾所聞、而不得聞、

我誠告爾、昔多先知、及義人、欲見爾所見而不得見、欲聞爾所聞而不得聞、○

我誠告爾、昔多先知及義人、欲見爾所見而不得見、欲聞爾所聞而不得聞、○

我實語爾、古之先知義士、咸欲睹爾之所睹、而不獲睹、欲聞爾之所聞、而不獲聞也。

For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

For verily I say unto you, that many prophets and righteous men desired to see the things which ye see, and saw them not; and to hear the things which ye hear, and heard them not.

For I assure you: Many prophets and righteous people longed to see the things you see yet didn’t see them; to hear the things you hear yet didn’t hear them.

For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous[ men] have desired to see[ those things] which ye see, and have not seen[ them]; and to hear[ those things] which ye hear, and have not heard[ them].

For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

For most certainly I tell you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see the things which you see, and didn’t see them; and to hear the things which you hear, and didn’t hear them.

Your father Abraham was filled with joy at the thought of seeing my day. He saw it and was glad.”

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They didn’t receive the things God had promised. They only saw them and welcomed them from a long way off. They openly said that they were outsiders and strangers on earth.

The prophets searched very hard and with great care to find out about this salvation. They spoke about the grace that was going to come to you.They wanted to find out when and how this salvation would come. The Spirit of Christ in them was telling them about the sufferings of the Messiah. These were his sufferings that were going to come. The Spirit of Christ was also telling them about the glory that would follow.It was made known to the prophets that they were not serving themselves. Instead, they were serving you when they spoke about the things that you have now heard. Those who have preached the good news to you have told you these things. They have done it with the help of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

I tell you, many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see. But they didn’t see it. They wanted to hear what you hear. But they didn’t hear it.”

The mystery was not made known to people of other times. But now the Holy Spirit has made this mystery known to God’s holy apostles and prophets.Here is the mystery. Because of the good news, God’s promises are for Gentiles as well as for Jews. Both groups are parts of one body. They share in the promise. It belongs to them because they belong to Christ Jesus.

All these people were praised because they had faith. But none of them received what God had promised.That’s because God had planned something better for us. So they would only be made perfect together with us.
